Tuesday's Cabinet meeting revealed that Emirates, an airline based in Dubai, has shown interest in partnering with Sri Lankan Airlines (SLA) with a view to its development.

The government’s initial plan to restructure SLA with another foreign company was not successful after which it decided to look towards another investor for this purpose.

However, no arrangements have been finalised as yet, with regard to this decision.

In 2010, Emirates had sold its stake in Sri Lankan Airlines, leaving Sri Lanka’s national career in the sole hands of the government. (Kelum Bandara)

Switzerland ,Australia ,China etc etc all privatized Airlines

    TONY Thursday, 15 June 2017 05:29 PM

BUT EMIRATES DID NOT BURDEN US WITH LOSSES OR LOANS

    Harry Thursday, 15 June 2017 05:44 PM

Would it be like the Volkswagen saga?

    Upul Thursday, 15 June 2017 06:10 PM

This would be the best possible option for Srilankan Airlines. Go for it, and they will make Srilankan profitable again.

    concern Thursday, 15 June 2017 06:10 PM

Do not believe a word. This is just to keep everyone happy and continue what they are doing.

    Thusita Thursday, 15 June 2017 06:55 PM

    Great news !!

    Leo Thursday, 15 June 2017 08:53 PM

Dear all, Emirates didnt generate new revenue, they cut all our routes got the costs down and showed a profit.

    Hesh Thursday, 15 June 2017 08:55 PM

Dubai can manage air lines, Singaporeans can, heck even Qataris can. Why cant our idiots?

    Fred Thursday, 15 June 2017 08:57 PM

Our governments boast about making Sri Lanka an aviation hub and then sells off the national carrier. Are there any aviation hub that sold off their national carrier?

    Greg Thursday, 15 June 2017 09:00 PM

We are left with a 15 to 20 year old fleet because the last time Emirates was obsessed with showing a profit and not about making our air line competent. Our people are just blind to think they will just do it for us.

Are they going to takeover the losses too via DM Android App

    lion Friday, 16 June 2017 04:59 AM

grab the opportunity, go for it

    DJ Friday, 16 June 2017 07:42 AM

Very true EK management did make profits just so they could make money on their paltry investment. But sold all UL assets and made the National Carrier dependent on loans and high leading cost. Sad that most don't investigate the books made by the currupt audit firm Erst and Young

    DJ Friday, 16 June 2017 07:46 AM

This would be the worst partner at this stage as easily with the right management our National Carrier could be made profitable. Our location is most suited to exploit the growth of Asia. Main issue we do not possess patriotic leaders

    Buchweiser Friday, 16 June 2017 09:03 AM

Although Arabs are known for their stupidity, they aren't this stupid to buy a debt ridden airline and deal with a government that are intellectually bankrupt with a majority of raving lunatics.

    ReaderD Friday, 16 June 2017 09:19 AM

Very good discuss with them unlike mad fellows of last regime.

    AliG Friday, 16 June 2017 09:34 AM

National Carrier? National disgrace. All senior management and staff should be replaced. Why do we want anything that is a collosal burden on taxpayers. Well said Jilla. Countries like Australia have privatised everything that was running at a loss.

    Anusha Friday, 16 June 2017 10:14 AM

They will mix contraceptive pills in inflight meals.

Fixed Cost Friday, 16 June 2017 11:02 AM

If they had cut all the routes as said by Leo said then HOW DID THEY GENERATE NET PROFIT AFTER CHARGING HUGE FIXED COSTS.

    saman Thursday, 15 June 2017 03:25 PM

    This is a go!

King Mihiraj Thursday, 15 June 2017 11:12 AM

Excellent. Those days we used to buy ticket from Sri Lankan airlines and got the privilege of flying Emirates.

    Leo Thursday, 15 June 2017 01:39 PM

The last time they abused the routes of Sri Lankan to their interests. Hope they respect our interests better this time.

Sri Wickrema Thursday, 15 June 2017 02:40 PM

Those days Sri Lankan earned profit and paid huge tax to govt coffers. But what has happened after Emirates left?

    oz Thursday, 15 June 2017 03:02 PM

Emirates want to snatch Australia route from Sri Lankan airways again to maintain Dubai as the hub between Australia/NZ and Europe. Why else would they be interested in loss making venture

    Lankan Thursday, 15 June 2017 03:02 PM

We had superb service but due to our former King s (MR) ego they had to cancel all ties. Its due to MR that Sri Lankan started running on a loss. via DM Android App

    lkboy Thursday, 15 June 2017 11:09 AM

Pls Emirates, come join us again.

    Arnold Thursday, 15 June 2017 04:02 PM

Forget the crap. This is about saving our asz this time around.

    Gihan Thursday, 15 June 2017 04:21 PM

The last time this happened, Emirates (which is not a national carrier) just took ULs landing slots and ran a skeleton service without any benefit to us.They also left a massive debt for new aircraft purchased, instead of leasing them!

Lord Wolfstein Thursday, 15 June 2017 04:23 PM

This will be the last chance. But only under foreign management under supervision of Sir Tim Clark. Fire all of the Sri Lankan management and the supernumerary staff which is 75%, employed by politicians.

    Leo Thursday, 15 June 2017 04:23 PM

No one would invest any where if they dont gain. We need investors to mainly keep our national carrier operational even at the expence of loosing a few routes. Better than loosing billions. via DM Android App

    wrong Thursday, 15 June 2017 04:25 PM

@ Leo Emirates is the Market Leader in this industry. So abusing small player's route cannot be believed

    Nimal Thursday, 15 June 2017 04:40 PM

They also made Sri Lankan a profitable airline with a modern fleet!

    lankaman Thursday, 15 June 2017 04:46 PM

    beggars can't be choosers

    sobers Thursday, 15 June 2017 04:47 PM

Srilankan is in a utter mess. Today a Ticket to trichi ( 40 minutes flight) is costin between Rs55,000 to 60,000.00 Where as a flight to malaysis or Bangkok is only Rs32000.00. It is the monopoly. Minister is in the dark! I am sure Emirates will not make the mistake again as the reputation of srilankan is so bad.
