Sports Minister Faizer Mustapha said yesterday that the national cricket team was badly hurt due to some insulting facebook posts targeting them after the team's defeat against Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Asian Cup tournament and appealed cricket fans not to bring down the mentality of the players.

He told this in parliament during the adjournment debate moved by the joint opposition MP Kanchana Wijesekara stating that the recent defeat was due to the issues in the cricket administration.

Minister Mustapha said moving such a debate following just two defeats was an insult to the players.

“ Sports is not politics. We must be able to accept both victory and defeat. Our players have been successful in the recent tournaments against the West Indies and South Africa. It is not fair to insult them on facebook just because they were defeated in two matches. If we think about our cricket, we need to think about the mentality of our players,’ he said.

He said it was not fair to claim that the cricket administration in Sri Lanka had collapsed on the basis that Bangladesh and Afghanistan won two matches against us.

He said politicians should safeguard the players and added that it was their national responsibility.

“We will engage in politics on platforms and in parliament. But don’t bring cricket into parliament. This adjournment debate is an insult to our players,” he said.

The minister said the team had made progress under the new coach Chandiuka Hathurusinghe in all three formats.

“Our progress under Graham Ford between January 2016 and July 2017 was 28 per cent in ODIs, 36 per cent in T20s and 46 per cent in Test matches. It is 16% in ODIs, 0% in T20s and 33% in Test under Nic Pothas. But it was 41% in ODIs, 57% in T20s and 57% in Test matches under the coachship of Hathurusinghe,’ he said.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Sri Lankan cricketers should know how to keep their heads cool. They won against South Africa and West-Indies teams. After those wins they lost their heads. This is a recurring thing in Sri Lankan Cricket.

    DHA Saturday, 22 September 2018 10:15 AM

Please for heaven's sake and improvement of SLC keep politics out !!! Give the selectors a free hand then see how well our boys will perform !!!

    fajar Saturday, 22 September 2018 10:16 AM

Sorry sir, you surely seems to be not a follower of the game. Losing a game is accepted. But continued failure cannot be accepted. Blaming the administration is understood. Why are they selecting players who have failed continuously. Is'nt it favourism.

    Patriot Saturday, 22 September 2018 10:21 AM

Yes it is true, no one should condemn our own national team for their one or two failures but if any shortcomings, these should be sorted out immediately.. All the best for future matches.

SL Cricket Fan Saturday, 22 September 2018 10:32 AM

Damn good for them. Hello Mr Sports Minister, these are not kinder garden kids, They are hurt? Oh the national cry baby's? they are adults. THIS IS CALLED BIG BOYS LEAGUE. Get used to it. We as fans are hurt, sad and angry. We want the obvious results. Do you know how the NBA, NFL, MLB players are treated in the USA when they fail? they are treated like adults and not like your little baby's.

    somapala Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:20 PM

If you fell that you are better raise your hand and then perform. Don't try .lecture like you are better

The Critic Saturday, 22 September 2018 10:42 AM

They are lucky. If in India their houses would have been burnt to the ground! They performed like a bunch of school kids.At this level and having won the Asia cup 5 times u expect a more professional performance from them!

    Moiez Saturday, 22 September 2018 10:44 AM

Cricketers job is to play sensible cricket as they know very well all sri lankans love their teams so they should play well and bring name to our country, its just they are playing like test cricket so definitely people of sri lanka especially the fans will get disappointment when they play bad cricket. So its better bring some very talented young guys and give others a chance. There are more young cricketers in sri lanka. Otherwise send these guys home and bring afghanistan people to sri lanka. We are all fed up seeing our cricketers now .Mr.Minister take action now.

"defeat was due to the issues in the cricket administration" - Oh , here we thought defeat was due to poor fielding, catching , batting, bowling, captaincy .. etc ....

    Thanos Saturday, 22 September 2018 10:50 AM

Agree that we must be able to accept both victory and defeat.

    rob Saturday, 22 September 2018 10:58 AM

Irrespective of what happened in cricket FB has become a disaster for societies...a place for meaningless gossip, cyber bullying, political propaganda, illicit affairs, drug parties and suicides etc.How come this is not banned...we call ourselves and intelligent species...

Public too is badly hurt regarding their performance inspite of being well paid. There are very well looked after. They have let down the whole country

    somapala Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:18 PM

No sportsman will ply to lose. Please understand that in sports either you win or lose, Sportsmanship is developed when you try your best but lose.

    sigiriya Saturday, 22 September 2018 11:25 AM

Our Cricketers do not deserve insults. You say that politicians should safeguard the Cricketers and do not bring Cricket in to Parliament. The anger of the Cricket loving public is that Politicians have taken over the administration under the guise of safeguarding Cricket, and thatParliament has entered Cricket. What ever statistics you quote, the fact is that Sri Lanka lost badly to both Bangladesh and to Afghanistan.Keep Politicians out of Cricket.Yes, you too!

    somerset Saturday, 22 September 2018 11:32 AM

IT IS NOT ABOUT THE COACH....OR THE CRICKETERS OR ABOUT LOOSING....IT IS ABOUT THE LETHARGY AND FITNESS OF THE CRICKETERS..!! THAT WAS CLEARLY SEEN WATCHING ON TV. THEY HAD NO HUNGER FOR WINNING..! SIMPLY SAID...THE BETTER SIDE WON...!

    Saman Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:08 PM

What do they expect? Now no Sri Lankan fan can face anyone in fb or any other social media. They are making fun of everyone. At least players get paid. Some players getting at least million for one ball they faced.

    Sanju Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:10 PM

Them cricketers better develop some thicker skins. To bear the brunt of being attacked by disappointed fans. After all they get paid big money. With luck, like many, they can make millions. Both the cricketers AND cricket boarders) The fans on the other hand only get the thrill of victory. And fans even have to PAY to watch matches. So it's their right to complain. Better buckle up Lankan cricketers and earn your dollars ! As for the minister, what does he know about cricket ???

    ANTON Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:25 PM

YES !!! FB .......... FUNNY BATTING......... FUNNY BOWLING .......

    ghostlanka Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:33 PM

I give Rs. 5000/-game ticket to cheer disabled cricketers lose a thrilling match and rather THAN watch a injury prone player trying to play cricket putting his team at risk by running him out and not converting one run into 2 runs or 3 runs we urgently need to win a match against teams like AFG or BAN.

    ghostlanka Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:38 PM

Fans do have the right to get personal with sportsman and sportswomen, after all their earnings are not entirely funded by the Treasury but by the FANS too.Local viewship of of our matches in Sri Lanka has being reducing with people just watching the last 10 overs or first 10 to less overs of a match. The support to the team cannot be seen on the streets. Social media support to the team is afforded by the privileged people.

dickie bird Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:38 PM

How many millions of fans were let down and hurt Mr. Minister? FB posts shall continue untill they perform or give up and pay back the public. How do you feel to be hurt with your nephew behind bars in Australia ?If you don't deserve, then We the public do not deserve a million folds.So... Mr. Minister do not talk shop or nonsense. These cricketers deserve to be humiliated as they are professionals.Did they play for a bookie or for the country?

    Sambo Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:46 PM

They are bunch of losers and that's a fact that cannot denied.

Ronnie Bugger Saturday, 22 September 2018 12:57 PM

Don't appeal. Mr. Minister, get rid of the entire SLCB. A lot of fuss gets generated when elections/selections but it all boils down to a whole heap of passing wind or farting.Just like as the saying goes - same old wine.

    chathse Saturday, 22 September 2018 01:01 PM

Everybody forgetting the root cause of the issue hamperig SL cricket team. That is not having a proper domestic structure to improve quality of the team. There are so much low quality cricket being played in Sri Lanka. Until we fix up our domestic system our team will fail.

    jayanath Saturday, 22 September 2018 01:02 PM

The reason for this debacle is bringing politics to the Cricket. Party politics as well as cricket politics, minister should address that problem too, appoint a new captain for the ODI team and see the deference in one year.

    Dinal Saturday, 22 September 2018 01:03 PM

Easy solution really, they should stop looking at FB. If they spend as much time training and working on their fitness rather than going on social media, i dont think there would be a need for all the posts. When people are more concerned about their image rather than the output they have to accept the consequences

Dear Sports Minister,"Our players have been successful in the recent tournaments against the West Indies and South Africa". Firstly let me tell you that the above was not a tournament it was a series. The entire country was badly hurt by not the last two matches but by the continuous failure. As a nation we have the right to ask questions.

    Maru Saturday, 22 September 2018 01:27 PM

Well dont be sorry! They need to be able to take criticism. They are adults and part if learning is through criticism.

Arjuna Ranawana Saturday, 22 September 2018 01:37 PM

Sorry ! . We should have to hurt them, because they are not heroes . Once in time Sri Lankan Cricketers brought world cup to Sri Lanka and we respected them and considers them our heroes. But now ! what happened ? . All are failed to achieve their gold up to now, even they have lost the game between Afghanistan also. What the talks now.

    San Saturday, 22 September 2018 01:43 PM

Faizer, That's the problem and ill attitude of Sri Lanka. They are not the bunch of school cricket players. They are highly paying professional cricketer who suppose to maintain quality of cricket with good winning spirit. Sri Lankan cricketers should be performed and executed countries requirements/expectations same as the other government and private sector workers including politicians. In any profession, there is no room for continuous failures. We need to established very tough measures to maintain quality of cricket. Simply NO PERFORMANCE, NO JOB.

    Shameer Saturday, 22 September 2018 02:01 PM

    If they tried

Rajindra Ariyabandu Saturday, 22 September 2018 02:07 PM

Respected Sir, I believe few days back you said that, you hardly watched cricket when you were a school boy. I think you should concentrate on putting SLC administration in order and let the professionals manage the team. We who followed SL cricket from our school days knows what had happened to SL cricket and that is why we are bitter, disappointed and frustrated. Thanks to social media we can now express our frustration. Please don't measure progress in cricket in percentages. Its not like cars brought to the country or paddy yields over the years. You as the final authority should never have approved the final team selection. If you are so interested please check the average age of our team and other teams in the Asia cup competition. That will tell why we are so lethargic in the field. I guess you know what Sanga said just before we played against Afghanistan. We are playing a set of "passengers" not energetic crickets. Its now up to you to put some sense into our selector

Wise Donkey Saturday, 22 September 2018 02:09 PM

How hurt are we to see we are annihilated by good for nothing teams because of our cricketers not fit to play even school cricket. Lucky they are in Sri Lanka by any chance if they are Indians they won't be be able to return to their country. They would have got a 'kunu bithara' bath at the arrival.

Buki Pala Saturday, 22 September 2018 02:12 PM

So sorry to hear minster. Please give them soothers (Suppu) and few girls to lick and play

Krishan Gallage Saturday, 22 September 2018 02:47 PM

Whle team was not there for winning. Enthusiasm was not there. They don't have the patriotic feeling our old generation cricketers had. That was the difference. Also I strongly believe we will be a successful team under Malinga or Lakmal. Matthew's and Thisara for some reason is difficult to understand. Hope SL will have better players with permanent positions

    Labby Saturday, 22 September 2018 02:51 PM

The cry-babies are now seeking sympathy from the general public? This is a good lesson to the Captain and the Head Coach who always talk about "going out there and having fun", and "going out there and enjoying themselves". Are they a bunch of boys seeking fun and enjoyment for whom the country pays massive salaries, or are they professional cricketers? Where's their responsibility? Let them take a lesson from other cricketing nations whose players play professionals and play for the pride of their country, and not for fun and enjoyment.

    Mk Saturday, 22 September 2018 04:23 PM

Cricketers are badly hurt by politicians who has ruined cricket in SL

    Sana Monday, 24 September 2018 11:42 AM

Hon. Minister, you are correct. We shouldn’t blame the players. We should blame you!
