The joint opposition yesterday suggested that President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Thilanga Sumathipala should at least temporarily resign from his post in order to rescue cricket from its present state.
Joint opposition member MP Shehan Semasinghe told a news conference that even former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga had urged the authorities to conduct an independent investigation into what was taking place at the SLC.
“Mr. Ranatunga said that the International Cricket Council (ICC) should investigate Mr. Sumathipala over his alleged gambling links and the conduct of affairs at the cricket board,” he said.
He said that the government had not responded to the suggestion made by Mr. Ranatunga despite the fact that he was more than qualified to speak about the subject of cricket. He also said the government should find a solution to what ails cricket in Sri Lanka immediately.
He pointed out that it was mandatory to avoid political interference in the SLC.
“Mr. Sumathipala should be asked to answer for what is taking place with regards to the game of cricket at the moment and he has to resign from his post in order that an inquiry could be held,” he added.
He also said that the cricketers were not the ones to blame for the state of cricket in this country.
Meanwhile, he said that the young parliamentarians in the joint opposition were of the view that a special debate should take place on the cricket issue in Parliament next week. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

Even though, if it comes from a JO looter, it is reasonable that Sumathipala should step down.
An Observer Friday, 01 September 2017 07:35 PM
JO, why don't you apply the same principle to the accused looters of the public funds by the members of the JO?

Not only Sumathipala, the sports minister also should resign.
Aladeniya Kirimathaya Friday, 01 September 2017 11:49 AM
Sumathipala should quit and all the JO rotters should be brought before judgement for their lootings.

Only cricket board in the world headed by a bookmaker !Can anyone keep cricket free from match-fixing due to punters betting on result with our own bookmaker in charge of SLC?

I have been commenting in this paper for quite some timethat the entire SLC board and its administrators shouldresign,if, they don't the next best thing is for the govt tostep in and throw them out.Politico's should not handlesports. Surely, Sri Lanka has many capable guys who could do a better job. Something has to be done soon before it'stoo late.

Very sorry, do not have any cricket discussion in parliament. MP's with backing of discarded politicians is ruining the country with organized strikes etc. So my young friends, cricket or any sports is out of Diyawanna.
