China would invest US$ 5 billion in Sri Lanka within the next two to three years, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinge said today.

Speaking during the opening of the Southern Industrial Development Zone in Hambantota , Mr. Wickremesinge said it would boost employment opportunities and would enhance the life style of the people.

“I would like to thank the Chinese Ambassador for confirming this investment" he said.

Chinese Ambassador Yi Xianliang, who confirmed this, said Chinese investors would always give priority to Sri Lanka.

He said China-Sri Lanka bilateral relations were a role model for all bilateral relations in the world. (Yohan Perera)

That's good. But keep the land in government ownership and lease them case by case. Not offer all the land in a platter blindly.

Sad truth is talk about investment and jobs is not a good selling point for our people. They just want the politicians to provide for them.

Sri Lanka should ensure that all those employed are Sri Lankan nationals and not Chinese, as done under the previous regime when Chinese labourers were used to build roads.Otherwise it will be a Chinese 'infestment'.

China won't create any local jobs in Sri Lanka. They bring there own workers from China and this will take the local economy. This similarly happened in certain African countries.
