Central Province Governor Niluka Ekanayake today said the Central Province Education Ministry Secretary should be held responsible for allowing school children to hold a 2.5 mile long bridal veil in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record as the longest sari, as he had issued the letter giving permission.

“I strongly condemn the use of school children for this event during school hours and it is an irregularity. The President has instructed not to use schoolchildren for social events in this manner. I am not prepared to safeguard anyone. The Chief Minister made a request and obtained approval for their participation but he had not instructed to line up them along the road in this manner. However, I would hold a formal investigation and submit the report to the President,” the Governor said.

The Regional Director of Education, Tilak Ekanayake, Zonal Director M.W. Wijeratne and the school Principal had been summoned to the Governor’s office last morning though the media was not allowed to cover the meeting. The governor told the media that the secretary of the ministry of education was absent as he had to take part in some other official duty.

The Governor also said the report on the inquiry into the incident would be submitted to President Maithripala Sirisena. The Provincial Director told the media that he submitted a report to the Governor and she would release a statement on this matter. (J.A.L. Jayasinghe and L.B. Senaratne)

What authority or qualification an ex-astrologer does have to investigate such an incident involving small school children? It seems he is hell bent to save the CM who is from the SLFP(M) faction.

    lkboy Tuesday, 26 September 2017 09:41 AM

    Yes. Governor has no business.

    Kadiya Tuesday, 26 September 2017 06:57 AM

Be that as it may, but the rich, spoiled couple should go down in the Guinness Book if not in history as the most stupid wedding couple in the world!!!

    ANTON Tuesday, 26 September 2017 07:11 AM

NOW THE PEOPLE CONCERNED MIGHT REPLY THAT THEY WERE GOING TO GIVE SOME LESSONS ON MEASUREMENT OF LENGTHS ON ROAD SURVEYS.

Merely holding inquiries, appointing commissions, making statements and press talks are all hoodwinking the public. What should be done is stringent punishment. It is a shame that majority of our SLAS professionals lack courage and honesty. Either they play to politicians tune or are corrupt. This will never happen in a private schiool as the parents body is more organised will not bow down for cheap matters.

    Baala Tuesday, 26 September 2017 07:24 AM

Saw her TV interview. Very stupid effort to save the politico CM and blame the official. No basis in her anaysis.

NOT WORTHY OF A GOVERNOR Tuesday, 26 September 2017 07:38 AM

" The Chief Minister made a request " - come on - whom are you trying to save - If the request was for a non school activity - then the chief minister is the prime accuse in this whole game ! - we understand your rather devious explanation for which we hope the President will see through and pull you up as well.

This really should make one mad. These stupid politicians go above the law and do whatever they want. If someone object they sent him or her home or even do physical harm. But when these amoral politicians are exposed they blame the officers

The "Powers that Be". STOP! talking and beating around the bush. TAKE ACTION. Interdict those responsible and then hold an inquiry. Sweet talking is not what is required. These are children from very low income, families and are pawns in the hands of politicians and others in authority. The average Sri Lankan has become MUTT and STUPID. This is the legacy of SWRD"s short visioned "Sinhala ONLY" policy. The ROT is seen from the top to the bottom, COMMON SENSE has been flushed down the toilet. We Sri Lankans need a walloping on our bare buttocks for having brought this calamity on us.We were such an exemplary nation not many moons ago, but everything has been turned on its head, by stupid policies of successive governments. It is only in SL, that we have Buddhist/Sinhalese children beginning school in Grade ONE, in Sinhala medium schools and likewise the Muslim and Tamil children. What BULLSHIT!, We should have, ONE CLASSROOM / ONE UNIFORM.

    ANTON Tuesday, 26 September 2017 08:09 AM

THIS COUPLE'S NAMES WILL BE RECORDED IN THE GUINNESS BOOK AND THE PRINCIPAL'S NAME WILL BE RECORDED IN THE LAW BOOK.

Kumara Dharmarathne Tuesday, 26 September 2017 08:13 AM

Central province Governor is more suitable for a Judge than a Governor and hope she will be appointed as a Judge in the near future.

    jaypee Tuesday, 26 September 2017 08:22 AM

    Looks like a Tug war

    Aristotle Tuesday, 26 September 2017 08:32 AM

The initial conclusion arrived at by the CP Governor as published in the media yesterday is childish and totally bias. In that the Governor has displayed to the country, her shameful timidness, low-level knowledge in holding an inquiry, waggy and wiggy nature etc. quite unsuitable to hold the post of a Governor.

    Sunil Tuesday, 26 September 2017 08:36 AM

    This is a kekille decision.

    L.P. Mendis Tuesday, 26 September 2017 10:11 AM

This discussion ends up with zero decision, but the Governor is protecting the Chief Minister for sure.

    Yehiya Tuesday, 26 September 2017 08:43 AM

Education not limited to school boundaries.

    surasena Tuesday, 26 September 2017 08:59 AM

The lady trying her best to settle things on the officials leaving out the politicians, just like Sil Redi. If H.E of the view that school kids must misused for such occasions, CM may be mocking the HE decision. As child rights were abused let the necessary authorities to take actions, instead politicians white-washing politicians.

    BuffaloaCitizen Tuesday, 26 September 2017 09:26 AM

First the CM should have realized that making such a request itself is illegal. This is similar to MaRa

Manuel Benjamin Tuesday, 26 September 2017 10:13 AM

CM organized this for his self publicity, nothing else.

    karen Tuesday, 26 September 2017 09:33 AM

who did the CM request permission from? was it the governors office? if so how did CM get permission to use school children for the event even if it was not mentioned that they would be "lined up them along the road", when the Governor herself says the President's orders are no school children for any social event. This Governor only knows to parade in front of TV cameras

    S.T.M. Jabeer (Attorney-at-Law) Tuesday, 26 September 2017 10:10 AM

Is CP - Governor is crazy? CM is 100% responsible for this nasty act.

Jeevan Ratnayake (Grama Niladari) Tuesday, 26 September 2017 10:15 AM

The fact is Governor is closely related to the Chief Minister, this is the fact.

    ravin Tuesday, 26 September 2017 11:42 AM

Dear Mr President, Please appoint a respectable Administrators to represent you at provincial level. Not jokers.

    A.J de Silva Tuesday, 26 September 2017 01:14 PM

Only police and judicial officers must conduct the investigations.Regret ,all the persons who gave orders to subordinate officers and who request' it' are answerable!!!!.We must protect the rights of those little .girls

    UDAYA Tuesday, 26 September 2017 02:41 PM

    laksiri Tuesday, 26 September 2017 03:10 PM

kandian are mentally sick people in sri lanka.

    malij Tuesday, 26 September 2017 05:48 PM

Your comment is totally out of context and it shows that the sickness is within yourself. It is a known fact that such people point their fingers at others for being sick.

    naaki Wednesday, 27 September 2017 08:57 AM
