CDS leaves for Mexico; request date from CID

10 September 2018 01:30 pm - 14     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, who had been summoned to the CID today, had left for Mexico for official visit this morning.

Admiral Wijegunaratne had been summoned by the Criminal Investigations Department to give a statement today with regard to the abduction of 11 youths in 2008 and 2009.

CDS Spokesman Ruwan Premaweera said Admiral Wijegunaratne left the country to attend the 208th Independence Commemoration Ceremony of United Mexican States, representing Sri Lanka on the invitation of Mexican Defence Minister General Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda.

The CDS is scheduled to return on September 19.

The Spokesman said the CDS had informed the CID in writing about the visit and had requested for another date to appear before the CID.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate earlier ordered the CID to take necessary action to arrest Admiral Wijegunaratne, if there was sufficient evidence that he had aided and abetted Navy Officer Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi, to evade court, where the Magisterial inquiry into the disappearance of 11 youths was underway. Oh what a circus, oh what a show Ravindra Wijegunaratne has gone abroad,........Why is the CID treating Wijegunnaratne as if he is above the law? Any ordinary citizen would have been arrested right at the beginning if there was even a hint of a crime being committed, yet with ample evidence of aiding a fugitive to hide and escape, the CID cannot make the arrest.THIS IS THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SERVITUDE BY THE POLICE TO THE POLITICIANS OF THE DAY. Take the bull by the horns man and make the arrest.

    Why did the allow him to pass through the airport if he has questions to answer at the courts? What a duplicitous state of affairs we are witnessing and if this the best a country can do to serve justice, who needs a nation state.

    Looks like the illicit activities deepened down halfway across the globe. This comes as a huge surprise, .... then again its the usual politics of sri lanka. I would like to know how many other Asian countries were invited to this 208th Independence Commemoration Ceremony of United Mexican States extravaganza ? [and] what is the special relationship with this country we have mostly unknown to many sri lankans ? CDS has gone deep down in to the pockets of drug cartel of Mexico and he may never come back.

    The OMP interim report clearly stated that all persons in positions of authority who have been reported to have involved in criminal activities need to be suspended until such investigations are over. This is just an action of arrogance of one such person.

    It looks as if the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. If not, then, the people at the top doesn't care about the law and order.
