The Ven. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera was admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital after he was injured in an alleged attack by the temple’s tusker.

A spokesman for the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya said the Thera was found lying near the elephant either having slipped while feeding the elephant in the morning or pushed aside by it.

The monk was rushed to the hospital by the devotees who were present in temple at the time. The devotees were concerned that the fall might have broken some of his ribs.

Meanwhile, Kalubowila Hospital sources said they were still not certain whether the elephant had attacked the monk, who was later transferred to a private hospital. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

He is the Chancellor of the Sri Jayawardhanapura where dogs were poisoned and kill just before Vesak a few years ago. Was silent when this was exposed in the media. Got his own medicine. No need for any more medicine at the Kalubowila Hospital.

A comment in poor taste. A person of whatever religion, cast or creed being injured shouldn't be taken as a joke. Shame on you

You are a tribal type thinker, no religion is given permit to violate the rights of animals.

When I was 10 years old, I was suddenly beaten by next door child by hitting to my head, by a stick. When I complained to my father about the pain in my head, he gave me a valuable advise. He advised me not to thrust 3 characters. They are ; Small children, Dogs and Elephants. I realized the true nature of his valuable advise when I little matured. I am very grateful my late father for his good guidance.

    SL Friday, 02 February 2018 03:56 PM

Time to release all poor elephants in captivity. Then all will be safe. Keeping elephants in captivity is against true Buddhism. No animals should be harmed.

    Dayani Friday, 02 February 2018 09:14 PM

I have seen these animals being mistreated at this temple. Maybe it is revenge or retribution.

Martin Milton Saturday, 03 February 2018 07:25 AM

This is typical. Why blame the poor Elephant? This the way animals end up being mistreated and killed. Extremely inappropriate in a so called 'Buddhist' country like Sri Lanka. Best ask the Reverend what happened and you will have the answer. If indeed the Elephant was to blame, one needs to determine why. And any concerned humans should make tremendous amends to this Tusker for being chained in 'custody' most of his life. The animal is NOT to be blamed. They will NEVER attack for no reason. MM

    rohani Saturday, 03 February 2018 08:04 AM

DO YOU KNOW THAT ELEPHANTS ARE VERY GOOD ANIMALS. THEY KEEP IN MIND THEIR ATTACKERS AND TAKE REVENGE, BUT NOT FROM ALL SO BEWARE

    Janaka Saturday, 03 February 2018 08:54 AM

    Indrajith Saturday, 03 February 2018 12:11 PM

After seeing the video in the "Sri Lankan Mirror" I feel sorry for the beautiful Animal who has been chained to a huge tree to completely restrict its movement. This is absolute animal cruelty.

    Rohan Saturday, 03 February 2018 06:50 PM

All those who justicfy the ven. Monks passed away as a good rerun as the temple is holding an elephant,Better ask yourself this. How many innocent cows that Muslims kill to elevate eid, how many goats that Hindus kill to celebrate Hindu festival and how many turkeys that the Christians kill to celebrate Christmas.None of the Buddhist festivals kill any animal at all. Yes I’m against keeping elephants too. But all non Buddhists who speak against Buddhist's keeping elephants, first clean your own backyard before you talk about the dust in Buddhism.

Nayanta Pandita Saturday, 03 February 2018 06:57 PM

Lord Buddha has never advocated maintaining elephants in temples. I am at a loss to understand this practice at Buddhist Temples.

    nadeera Monday, 05 February 2018 12:36 PM

May the venerable thero now be showered with light and be better aware of the need for love and compassion; and may we bless all the captive elephants with love, compassion and freedom.
