A section of the ceiling of the Immigration Office at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) collapsed on Friday due to heavy showers an official said.

The Official at the BIA said that following the incident, three out of ten Immigration counters were shutdown pending the restoration of the ceiling.

According to the official, the ceiling of the BIA had collapsed in several sections on many previous occasions on account of heavy rainfall.

However, the authorities had failed to provide a permanent solution.

The official said that such incidents could make a negative impact on the country’s tourism. (Text and pics by Indika Sri Aravinda)

Get the contractor to replace free of charge, those who pocketed commissions might be worried

This government doesn't do anything except criticising the previous regime, not even routine maintenance. Actually they have no time to do such work because every morning noon and night they have to invent strategies to defend their power . This is a national embarrassment.

If Government does not have money to repair, they can even BORROW the required MONEY from Perpetual Treasuries. They will have the looted money with them.

So, for the ceiling to collapse due to rain, does the building have no roof? Are our people so corrupt or stupid as to build a building that way. Perhaps the right reason is a heavily leaking roof that poured the water on to the ceiling! So, please first repair the roof. Otherwise, the ceiling will fall down again! In life, we need to address the cause of things, instead of the effects. Politicians please take note!

Any wonder they call it a 'false' ceiling.

"The official said that such incidents could make a negative impact on the country’s tourism."The morose and rude attitude of the Immigration Officers at the counters has a far more negative impact on tourism. As part of their training, they should be taught to smile and speak politely, because a tourist's first point of contact with Sri Lanka is the Immigration Officer who deals with him.

These parliamentarians should personally visit the places like this to assess the situation rather than simply relying on other people comments. It indicates the deplorable condition of the international Airport.

That isn't a ceiling collapse, it's panels getting sodden and falling down. A real ceiling collapse would kill people.Still, I echo the comments, poor quality work is standard for Sri Lanka.

This is why we need to fight against corruption. When politicians get commissions country ended up with sub standard product.See the reputational damage alone due to this at critical asset. Without colours culprit s need to be punished
