Following a meeting of the Karaka Sangha Sabha, the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Most Venerable Warakagoda Gnanaratana Thera in a strongly worded statement today highlighted concerns about the challenges posed by internal and external conspiracies against Sinhala Buddhists and emphasized the need for the Mahanayake Theras of the Three Nikayas and the patriotic people of the country to act in unison to face such injustices.

“All other religious groups in the country should keep it in mind that Buddhists in Sri Lanka had always respected and allowed unhindered the existence of other religions. We condemn acts by other religious groups that insult this tolerant Buddhist ethic,” the statement said. “Although we do not approve the aggressive behaviour and speech of Bhikku Galabodaatte Gnanasara the viewpoint expressed by him cannot be discarded. Insulting Bhikkus by various groups without inquiring into the veracity of the issues raised by him cannot be condoned."

Buddhism betrayed again. Oh the enlightened one why these wolfs in sheep's clothing are ruining thy name

    snajee Friday, 23 June 2017 12:18 PM

All monotheistic religions have committed grave crimes agains humanity and no one belonging to such religions have a morale right to talk about respect for religions

No one is above the law. This is need today. Country must learn lot from Singapore.

Buddhism is a religion of peace. In this country from the supreme constitution, Buddhism has been given the recognition, protection and priority by the highest echelons of the Government . At the same time the freedom of practicing preaching other minority religions have been enshrined in the constitution of the country. If each person, each religious group and each religious member of the clergy understands this truth by respecting others regions by acting within their boundaries there cannot be any disunity among any religious group in this country. Let us do that!.

I lived in a multi religious society in SL, went to a Tamil Christian School, had mostly Sinhalese friends, celebrated Eid, Pongal, Xmas, Vesak etc with neighbours and we never had any religious related issues. If BBS feels Buddhists have problems, then sort with your Sasanaya and don't drag other religions solve your problems. Remand monks, moulavis, pastor/father or ayyars if they humiliate other religions. Don't allow one religion to attack another religion. All are equal, no one is superior to the other.

The Most Venerable Chief Prelate including The Governing Body of The Asgiri Chapter has now stated their view... which is the view of the majority of the Sinhala Buddhists of Sri Lanka... Now it is up to the Government -- that is, the Ruling faction and the Opposition --- has to act together , without any division --- on this ruling. The masses will be watching closely! BUDHU SARANAI.

Where were these chapters when Ganasara was playing havoc and voicing racial comments and threatening people with death? well i do accept no proper minded person with a heart would speak on racial terms

    Sahan Wednesday, 21 June 2017 10:39 AM

If Gnasara to be questioned there are lot of other people from othere religions to be questioned too.Why only him?

The Mahanayake's statement is too little and too late. If there are issues relating to two communities, it is best if relevant personnel sit down in a civic manner and discuss a resolution. Its high time the President and Prime Minister adreesed the issue rather than hoping it will resolve on its own.Singapore is a glowing example of communal harmony where hindus, budhists , muslims and christians get along fine. They have achieved this status through dispute resolution. This is the best time for CIVIC SOCIETY to involve themselves in preventing COMUNAL MAYHAM as in the past as every right thinking person knows the impact it brings

    channa Wednesday, 21 June 2017 10:16 AM

Halal was not an issue then. You muslims tries to impose your religious requirements on all Sri Lankans.

Channa Jasenthuliyana Wednesday, 21 June 2017 10:14 AM

He became a trouble maker because other religions are trying to destroy the Sri Lankan culture. for instance the "Halal" gave an opportunity to him.

    BUDDHIST Wednesday, 21 June 2017 08:01 AM

" god forbid" , that there will not be a "Martin Luther" or "Hendry the 8th - (of course without the many wives ! )" rising in this "buddhist " country .

    kumar Wednesday, 21 June 2017 03:04 AM

People like Asad Saali,Vigneshwaran should be questioned first.

    Hubert Tuesday, 20 June 2017 10:09 PM

Law and order should be enforced at once otherwise others take law into their hands weakness of the government to deal with Gnanasara will snow ball the religious fanaticism

    Shelly. Tuesday, 20 June 2017 09:36 PM

I respect Sanga . But I dont see they are always correct. The media presentation had gone very far than needed. via DM Android App

    Devaka Tuesday, 20 June 2017 09:29 PM

Much needed statement to avert the existing reverse discrimination

    S.P.RAMKUMAR Tuesday, 20 June 2017 09:29 PM

Government must bring ant conversion law then problem will be over.

    Hadam Tuesday, 20 June 2017 09:14 PM

Correct no one should criticize any religions, in my personal experience as Muslim and went to Buddhist school, I only felt we are different only after BBS. That's got to be something.

    Somasiri Tuesday, 20 June 2017 09:06 PM

In the past, we have seen the chief prelates issuing similar statements. But the status core remains regardless.

    Dr. A.C.B. Jayaweera Tuesday, 20 June 2017 08:40 PM

First Ven. Gnanasara Thero should be questioned by you all and he has to surrender to the Police, he is the trouble maker. (I am a Buddhist)

    Snowy Tuesday, 20 June 2017 08:13 PM

This is the result of the breakdown in decline among the monks. If this was addressed by the chiefs, this could have been avoided.

    Sambo Tuesday, 20 June 2017 08:03 PM

We had heard tougher statements than this but nothing has changed. It all still remains the same.
