Joint opposition parliamentary group leader Dinesh Gunawardane today informed Speaker Karu Jayasuriya that not giving bail to MPs who have been remanded has become a problem for those MPs to carry out their duties in the House.

Mr Gunawardhane actually requested the speaker to look into this matter.

He raised this matter in the House just less than 24 hours after courts decided to re-remand MP Wimal Weerawansha till April 13 this year. However Mr Gunawardhane did not name any MP when he made the request from the speaker.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya who responded said he has already begun to discuss the issue with the relevant persons and assured that he will take necessary action this week. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

In order to clean the parliament of criminals every MP against whom a criminal proceedings is running should be suspended from Parliament. A convicted MP should automatically lose his parliament seat, except he was pardoned as SF. Apart from this, every MP who still has a bit of a sense of honor in such a case would resign.

Dinesh - You better realise that you are not a law unto yourself. You are - (whether you like it or not) - was sent over there by us as an MP - to serve us - and therefore can rightly be called a servant to the people - NO ONE IN THIS COUNTRY IS ABOVE THE LAW- If any one commits an offence, law applies to everyone equally There is no special "treatment" to you (because you serve as as our servant - ie MP ) or to any of the jokers over there, All will have to face the music for offences committed.. Unfortunately you jokers start falling sick when arrested - this sickness needs to be eradicated so that you'll can enjoy being a guest (in prison) like all others (whether in Remand or serving a sentence)

Dose it mean, that MP's can do any injustice to the society and escape because they are MP's?

    Amir Wednesday, 22 March 2017 12:40 AM

Dinesh, will you please understand one thing loud and clear. MPs are not above the law. Those who have committed criminal offence need to pay for their sin. Wimal is not a good guy as far as the law is concerned. But he can prove his innocence.

No elected MP should be allowed to attend parliament until all criminal cases against him are cleared, period. People will want a crook to represent them in the house and vote on enactment of laws.

    Bala Tuesday, 21 March 2017 10:08 PM

What nonsense is this. A criminal is a criminal. If in remand he or she can come to parlament as Weerawansa does. but he need not be out as that only serves himself - not the voters.
