The education, petroleum and healthcare sectors countrywide are likely to be disrupted tomorrow because of anti-SAITM protests to be conducted by a trade union alliance led by the GMOA.
According to the GMOA, those in the ayurvedic and dental sectors including nurses are also expected to join them in a picketing campaign outside the Colombo National Hospital.
It said some 15 teacher and principal associations would go on sick leave during the day while the medical faculty lecturers and a group of university lecturers and students have threatened to boycott classes.
The GMOA said petroleum unions would picket outside the Orugodawatte and Kollonnawa Oil Refineries against the privatization of the country’s education sector.
“We urge the government to abolish SAITM and stop the move to privatize the country’s health and education,” GMOA Assistant Secretary Naveen De Soysa told a news briefing today.
He said the boycott was warning to the government to resolve this matter without delay.
Ceylon Teachers' Services Union (CTSU) General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam was attempting to sabotage trade union activities. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

GMOA, I think your bit over the limit now. Taking school kids to protests cannot be condoned at any cost.

The public at large and the general masses must get on the roads and put an end to the GMOA calling strikes on SAITM just to safeguard the limitless earnings in private practice. Have these GMOA members ever run free clinics for the poor? They are parasites living on the poor when they fall sick. The other idiotic unions follow the deaf and the blind. It's high time people exercise civic responsibilities and control these medical goons.

A team of foreign doctors -cardiologists- is busy offering free service to do heart surgery on poor children in Galle. Their target is 30 patients within the ten days they are going to be here. This is their 12th visit. Has any of our GMOA guys at any time in their life done free service of this nature? They are clever organizing protests, strikes and motorcades. Not enough the disturbance they create to the general public now they are pulling out the teachers also into this, leaving the poor school children with no classes. I wholly blame the government for tolerating this nonsense. A good baton charge will settle the matter instantly. If they cant leave it to the public to handle this. There should be a limit to anything. This has gone too far.

GMOA, govt. elected by citizens for law making. Govt. waiting for Supreme Court judgment in all major issue. Let govt. govern with executive and judiciary. Stop lawlessness

Something rotten in this whole affair. A world renowned sleuth should be brought in to investigate what the rot is all about!

You don't need a fictional Sherlock Holmes to figure out the truth. MR started SAITM in 2009 and until his defeat in 2015, there were no issues with the so called private institution. Now all of a sudden it is a problem. If it was indeed an issue why wasn't it taken up during the first few years of operation. Nevertheless the problem in SL is that everything is given for free, free primary education, free tertiary education, free government job, free duty free allowances and so forth. As a result the ones who are fortunate enough to receive them take it for granted. All form of studying should charge a certain fee and if unable to pay them, a loan system should be introduced like in proper developed countries. As long as everything is handed on a plate, this is what will happen.

please give a free hand to SF to handle this and he will ensure there will be no more strikes by GMOABy the way, Dutugeminu from Kelaniya was tasked for this by MR previously

Doctors struggle to safeguard their social class which has special privileges other professions do not enjoy and not for betterment of free education or health care.Their aim is to retain the profession on hands of very limited number of persons and keeping scarcity in doctors This is the way they can enjoy special privileges. We must clearly understand this. to deceive people they talk about free education. But they never talk about hardships patients face in Governments hospitals due to private practice.

GOMA seems reinforcing to build common front for final assault, but if they able to stop channel work for 2 months it would be more effective than medical students' 8 months boycott(PL.don't stop channeling for few hours)
