The Megapolis and Western Development Ministry announced that it had submitted a proposal to the government to build an airport within the Colombo Port premises.
The ministry believes that if this project becomes a reality, it would be the strongest port in the region.
Minister Champika Ranawaka said if the proposal is implemented within the next 10 years, the people would capable to airlift from the Colombo Fort without going to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
He also said the Eastern and Western terminals would be built within next five years making the Colombo harbour the strongest port in the region. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Idea would be wonderful as long as there is no traffic build up in vicinity and no issues in take off and landing due to high rise buildings...... via DM Android App

business Hub should be uplifted with extra facilities rather than building whole new city which in Sri Lankas case futile..and unfeasible

A metro transportation system in around Colombo is much more important that a airport within the port of Colombo.

where in the world have you seen an airport inside a port?
alex Tuesday, 25 July 2017 11:12 AM
at this rate I wouldn't be surprised if the minister announces the next plan is to build a port inside Katunayake airport
Mohan Tuesday, 25 July 2017 11:15 AM
Sounds like a bad idea. It would only increase the traffic congestion. What will happen to the BIA?Need to complete the light rail project first, ASAP.
johan Tuesday, 25 July 2017 12:20 PM
Bad idea for using such a valuable land for runways.Colombo is a business place.Re think of the proposal

Hollow talks again. The real need is to move such facilities further away from Colombo to clear the mess to make the city livable. Besides, the planned Port city is only 1.5km wide at its widest stretch. Where on the earth are you going to put up an Airport runaway in that cramped space? And, operational facilities needed to run an Airport; unless he meant a small Runaway for small planes to ferry passengers between Port city and Katunayake. That seems possible though. Ideally, there should be a Metro between Port city and Airport.
