The Postal Trade Union Federation yesterday staged a protest against the proposed sale of the 123 year-old Nuwara Eliya post office building to an Indian businessman to run a restaurant.
More than 500 representatives of the postal department trade unions, civil society organizations, and people of the area participated.
They accused the authorities of planning to hand over the buildings of Nuwara Eliya Post Office, Colombo Fort Post Office, and Galle Fort Post Office that should be conserved as national heritage buildings and monuments of the British rule not sell them to businessmen to run hotels and restaurants .
President of the Post and Telecommunication Officers Union S.Kariyawasam pointed out that it was a matter of serious concern that property of the people were being sold to businessmen in this manner. (Txt and Pix by Shelton Hettiarachchi)

Fake love for heritage. These very same people wouldn't care to see cracked walls, leaking roofs, overgrown garden, peeling paint and rusty iron work. Wouldn't bother to bend and pick a piece of paper dropped on the floor and break a cobweb. Love for heritage comes from within not from politicians who are hell bent to see some protest of some sort. These old buildings built by Britishers need concerned maintenance. Let this be a hotel that would add asset and beauty to the town. Govt., must go ahead with their plans in spite of these cry babies.

Why do a Post office should occupy a prime land? If done i proper manner, this is good move, Otherwise we are wasting our resources without utilising them for the best use.

Most of the Heritage houses are demolished by the owners and build new houses for the family members even the postal workers houses. We boast about our heritage, and eating and spending by borrowing from other nations. What a shame.

I was born in Nuwaraeliya when my father worked as the Postmaster in this same building almost 73 years back. If required this building be renovated and kept with the Postal Department.

What a tragic situation, when those who govern the country are willing to sell our heritage at the blink of an eye lid, instead of taking pride in such sites and protecting them for future generations! This country does not belong to half backed, uncouth, corrupt politicians - of all colors and hues - to do what they please. I think its time for the people to unite and get on to the streets and launch mass protests to stop this insanity.

This government is like an island sales rep. It is selling everything it can and the man behind gets a good cut. They may also try to sell the Borella Cemetary if they can get a commission. The public has all the right to protest against this. By the time this government is gone the entire country will be sold to India and China.

Definitely a minister is indirectly behind this sale. One of his/her relation will buy it under a different name and run the business.
