About 50 per cent of teachers attached to state schools had refrained from engaging in their services today by applying sick leave, the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) said today.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin told the Daily Mirror that the trade union action launched by them against the SAITM was a success.

“Many teachers have applied sick leave today following the short-notice we made. These teachers are engaged in this trade union action despite of several threats,” he said.

Meanwhile, Education Ministry Media Secretary Kalpa Gunaratne said there was no effect on the teachers attendance at schools today though several teachers’ union had claimed that they are on sick leave today.

“However, there is a considerable decrease of attendance of children,” he said. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

Who gave them medical certificate for sick leave while the doctors also on strike. We are fed up with government as much we are with the doctors. We don't want a weak kneed government to tolerate this continued nonsense. Shame.

I am wondering how foolish these teachers are, can our children gain knowledge from these teachers? These teachers do not have the brain to rationalize what benefit they will get by striking in favour of this mafia-doctors? Are these striking teachers going to get free consultation from these mafia-doctors without paying the RS 1925/- consultation fees? Dear teachers with all the respect for you, please think whether these mafia-doctor-gang is not going to give you free consultation. Government - there are more than 4000 (four thousand) Foreign Draduated Doctors (FGD) in Sri Lanka struggling to get through the Act-16 exam, sack all these striking doctors, appoint all the Foreign Graduated Doctors (FGD) unconditionally. These FGD has better exposure than these frogs-in-the-well mafia-doctors. This is also a form of terrorism, killing innocent patience lives by disrupting medication and disrupting the normal course civilian life.This professional-terrorism must be wiped in Srilanka!
