The United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG) parliamentary group which met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Bentota today had come up with a proposal to provide a special grant to public servants to purchase vehicles.

The group had decided on this in the wake of criticism of the the budget proposal to stop issuing duty free vehicle import permits to certain categories of people.

Informed sources said many MPs had been of the opinion that this budget proposal should be revised.

Apart from this, many members had wanted a full restoration of fertiliser subsidy which had been restricted. However no final decision had been taken on this, but it had been decided to give some additional relief to farmers.

It had also been decided that the party should strictly adhere to an economic policy based on social market economic principles.

The group had divided themselves into five groups under five leaders, namely, Ministers Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and Harin Fernando and Deputy Ministers Eran Wickremaratne, Harsha de Silva and Ajith P Perera.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka were the keynote speakers at the meeting. (Yohan Perera)

Dear Ranil, do you think that only gogevernment servants deserves this benefit. What about the others who work for the development of this country. Why do you load all benefits to government service? and nothing open other sectors? Please tell us why other people should not be buying a car at duty free co session when government servants are given duty free? Please govern it when the opportunity is given before it is taken back by people. Your budget is a hopeless product and the people will teach you a lesson in the upcoming election unless you do things right.

Shamelessly these MPs are fighting for their privilegs when people are faced with so many burning issues. They come forward to contest an election to serve the people but once in power their only aim is to see how much they together with their families could make. In even in parliament to cast their vote for a bill they stoop to the level of soliciting bribes in the form of additional perks. The most pathetic situation is the public who voted them to power are oblivious to their antics. Even next time around, votes will be caster in favour of these selfish politician. God only could save Sri Lanka from this peril.

Soon after this government came to power finance minister reduced duty on vehicles saying common man is given the opportunity to enjoy the facility. Why did he do this bluntly? Cheating ? ...Now taxes and smoke test etc are raised extensively making it extremely difficult to the special man too.

It seems this budget will have many amendments, best is to scrap the budget and have a fresh one since adhoc changes will not balance the revenue resulting in people paying daily price increases.
