The water supply to Colombo, Sri Jayawardanepura Kotte and Dehiwala-Mt Lavinia was disrupted today after the water in the Kelani River was found to have been contaminated with oil, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) said.

The contamination had resulted in the Ambatale water treatment plant being forced to limit the supply of water.

The NWSDB said it hoped to resume the supply of water as soon as the contamination of the river was cleared up.

Meanwhile, NWSDB Deputy General Manager Ranjith Perera said the pumping of water from the Ambatale water treatment plant was stopped at 9.45 a.m. until 1.30 p.m. because of oil patches detected in the Kelani River.

He said the water board in collaboration with the Navy and Army was taking measures to flush out the oil patches.

“The oil patches appear to have surfaced again following the heavy rainfall. We are trying to figure out the origin of the oil patches,” he said.

I have noticed this oil contamination from the water they are supplying to our home in Nawala Road, Colombo - 05 area from the last two weeks onwards. They have identified now only. This oil contamination to drinking water is happening more than two weeks now. Water supply board is very poor in maintaining the water quality and identifying the issues. Authorities should take necessary actions to investigate the current malpractices in the water supply and ensure proper water quality in future.

What the hell is going on.Water Board should compensate all affected consumers.Only a week or two ago we had to suffer for many days. This is a serious issue and at least this time the offenders should be severely punished.

Could this be an oil strike? The exploration has been going on since the 60s and a big political gimmick.

The Kelani River is the most polluted river in our country. The culprits are the big industrial companies who are highly connected to the corrupt politicians. These politicians will do anything as long as they get their kickbacks. God save Sri Lanka.

Create a problem. Then increase the tariff saying if to supply drinking water cost is high.

We need industrial waste collection delivery drainage pipe line system along the two banks of the Kalani river to collect industrial affluent and make treatments and discharge to the sea. All the industries should do preliminary treatments and discharge affluent to this drainage system. They should declare the toxic they discharge and pay monthly levy proportionate to the toxicity level of the affluent they discharge. This is a better and priority project for Sri Lanka rather than building a road bridge between Sri Lanka and India.

Our water bed in North Central Province is contaminated by indiscriminate use of chemicals and fertiliser. Now the rivers are polluted with oil. Every drop of oil and chemicals to ground adds to ground / water pollution affecting the health of public, from various sources such as service stations, motor mechanical repair workshops and dumping of oil from households etc etc. We need to review our environmental legislation (not by politicians but by a skilled , learned committee). If not it will be too late to protect our water sources.
