It is true that you can’t compare the 30 year brutal war with winning the world cup. After all MR and Arjuna both did not win them by themselves. There are a lot of other factors and contributors involved in the win. At least Arjuna won it on the battlefield. A test match may be won on the fifth day. There are many positive and negative contributions throughout the duration of the game. Likewise during the 30 years there were ups and downs. Narrow minded people always remember the person who hit the winning run as the hero. 25 years out of 30, MR was supporting LTTE – there are enough proof – protesting with LTTE in front of UN, late Sripathy’s and Tiran’s disclosures, RADA revelations,..

While Arjuna ranatunga actually captained the side ad played in the field to win the World Cup in 1996 While Mahinda was never actually involved in the physical war. The man who actually won the war on the field was Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka. and look what happened to him its as if the credit for winning the world up goes firstly to the chairman of the team select committee rather than the team captain via DM iOS App

@ferdy - if Arjuna claims the credit of winning World Cup was only because his leadership, it is somewhat like MR and blind followers, giving the credit of winning the war to MR. To be fair with Arjuna at least he lead the team on the field. In that case more credit of winning the war with LTTE should go to who lead the war on the battlefield (people like Denzil K, Janaka J, Sarath F etc.) 25 years out of 30 years of war, MR was with LTTE. If you analyze clearly with statements made by Sripathy (before he was killed) and Tiran, MR IS NOT A HERO

Arjuna won the world cup alright , but comparing that with a leader who won a brutal civil war that bled this country for more than 30 years, a guerrilla war that almost all of us thought un-winnable is a 3rd grade joke. besides, we are not that DDB to forget how you ran the cricket show afterwards. MR has his share of many a shortcomings but he did many things to the country that was uniquely him. He was a great leader but a poor manager. Leadership is an inborn attribute management is a skill you acquire. Its worth betting on MR to make that change and be a comeback kid. I am sure he will.
