The Malwatte Chapter Mahanayake, the Most Venerable Thibbatuwave Siddartha Sri Sumangala Thera told Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga that, though the Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) led governments had ruled the country for the last 20 years, no proper development had trickled down to the villages.

The Mahanayake Thera said the people of Hambantota had pressing needs besides a port and an airport. He said that as a result the people virtually took to the streets to unseat the last government .

He said, “Whenever the SLFP contested in alliance with other parties forgetting its hand symbol, the party’s founding policies and principles were compromised over the wishes of others. Therefore, an SLFP-led alliance could not meet the aspirations of the people. The SLFP could have preserved its identity by contesting under its hand symbol. Some forget village development when in power. One need not be in power to serve the village. Mr. Sajith Premadasa did it even without power".

Mr. Ranatunga said, “Nothing was done for the country during the last six months. SLFP-led alliances were in power for the last 20 years, but no development took place during the tenure of former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.” (J. A. L. Jayasinghe)

The respected Mahanayake knows very well how Upcountry and specialy Kandy has been not developed. No new roadways, No fly overs, Villages not developed, Only politicians developed themselves. Voters will teach a lesson on the 17th for step motherly treatment rendered to Kandy!

I am Buddhist but I do not agree with Mahanayaka at all. Infrastructure is utmost important without which development in other areas are slower. Lanka has seen tremendous development in terms of roads development a prerequisite for all other developments, subsequently developing most area in the country. Mahanayaka should go and visit country areas. Unfortunately mahanayaka is talking politics and rubbish, lost the respect.

It is worse in places in the north and east. I was training in the north and I could see small hut where the majority live. The you came across nice big building like mansion or places and further observation that were military camps. That was the Rajapaksa development. No more of these please. We as a nation want to live together and in peace.

There is a prediction that Buddhism would be obliterated soon in Sri Lanka. Please disrobe and talk politics. very soon, none of the priests will get free dana from the Buddhist devotees. We do not want priests in politics.

    Harish Thursday, 16 July 2015 10:47 AM

Irrespective of the truth of the mahanayaka theros statement this is not a good sign. We never had high priest talking politics to polititians in front of media.now opposition to this will use this statement for political gain where buddhism will be the ultimate looser.what the hell is going on this country..
