Video: Bandula challenges Harsha, Ravi for TV debate

UPFA Parliamentarian Bandula Gunawardane today challenged Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake or Policy Planning and Economic Development deputy minister Harsha de Silva for a debate on any television channel over the current economic crisis in the country.

Mr. Gunawardane told a news conference that Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran had given false information at a news conference yesterday with regard to the economic situation in the country.

“I, as a person who has worked in Finance Ministry and who had held various ministerial portfolios, am ready to come to an open debate on any television channel about the lies that the finance Minister had told yesterday to the country and the world.

Mr. Gunawardane said he was ready to debate economic factors such as the bond issue in the Central Bank, interest rates, unemployment and the exchange rate.

He said the country was unprecedently going backward in every aspect economically, politically and culturally under the rule of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. (Ajith Siriwardana)

TV debate on Sri Lanka Economy! Mr. Silva you should debate, expansion of SL economy has been notably slower than expected as SL struggle to thrive in an uneven global environment. Entire world in Macro-slowdown! The oil-price drop has not boosted average Sri Lankan’s consumer confidence. SL needs sound fiscal policy and need to reach out one of world largest economy China with Asian Development Bank which boost funding for infrastructure projects in SL and rest of Asia about lend more than $100 billion over next five years! We must also involves Japan to play more active role in SL. But don’t get embroiled in rivalry. My recent visit to SL and speaking to average SL, even my family members in Colombo and rest of the people I spoke to in south or east they will tell me how much infrastructure project help them from Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa (regardless of corruption some of the members).

This govt. has been in power only for 4.5 months. What can you achieve economically during that period. Can you at least finalise a tender. Therefore I suggest that the debate should be on corruption, robbery, waste of public funds on foreign jaunts, using public resources for election purposes, diverting income due to Rupavahini and ITN to family channel CSN, handing out projects without tender procedures and last but not least HOW TO LIVE ON A BUDGET OF RS. 2500.00 PER PERSON AS SUGGESTED BY WAIMA.
