State Minister of Child Affairs Rosy Senanayake said some people were attempting to gain political advantage from the incident where an 18-year-old girl was raped and killed at Punguditivu in Jaffna recently.

Minister Senanayake highlighted the fact that steps must be taken to put a stop to such incidents and said perpetrators should be severely punished so that such cruelties would not happen in the future.

She said the ministry together with Child Protection Authority had organized a candle light vigil at the Independence Square at 5.30 p.m. today to express sympathy and solidarity for the family members of the girl.

“I appeal the people to come with a candle and express your sympathy and solidarity to the bereaved family members of the victim and show our commitment to stop such cruelties in the future,” she said.(Ajith Siriwardana)

What do you think you are doing, same as everyone else. Trying to gain political millage. This is the present world, specially Srilankan politics.

Oh reallyy....What about the girl that a certain ministers son has allegedly taken unlawfully from her parents why have you not defended that girl yet. Whether she left willing or unwilling our social norms dont allow it yet you rosie being a minister of affairs pertaining to children did nothing. I will not applaud your election stunt, nor will I weep for people whos habits come from our big neighbor. BE EQUAL IF YOU CLAIM TO BE WHAT YOU SAY YOU ARE. This yahapalanaya has haulted the countrys progress time to go home.

    Prasad Sunday, 24 May 2015 01:21 PM

I live overseas and unable to attend.I wish I could have .But my heart felt condolences to the affected family.Maximum punishment to the men from hell and hope this vigil will unite the country against such barbaric acts in future.

This is a good move to show that people in the south care for people in Jaffna and that tragedy should not be used to gain political milage like what MARA is trying to do.
