Chandra Schafter to retire

Insurance industry veteran Chandra Schafter is to retire from his position as the Director/Deputy Chairman of Janashakthi Insurance PLC at the company’s forthcoming Annual General Meeting scheduled for March 31. 

Schafter, who is widely considered the ‘father of insurance’ in Sri Lanka, counts over 60 years of experience in the industry. 

He was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award presented at the Asia Insurance Industry Awards in 2012, Asia’s most prestigious awards spanning many countries. 

He is the founder of Janashakthi Insurance PLC and has played a key role in establishing and managing several insurance-related businesses and insurance companies. 

A well-known sports personality, he is a double international having represented Sri Lanka in both cricket and hockey. 

He has served the administration of sports at different levels having formerly been a national selector in both cricket and hockey.

He was the Vice President of the National Olympic Committee, President of the Mercantile Cricket Association and Manager of the National Cricket team on several occasions.
