The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said today Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayke should be aware that he too would have to pay the newly imposed ‘Mansion Tax’ of Rs.1 million.

“The Finance Minister is also subjected to this tax. We commend the Mansion tax as a means of acquiring money from those who have. The funds accrued from this tax should be properly monitored to make sure that the benefits will trickle down to the ordinary citizen,” JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath told a news conference.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayke in the Interim Budget he presented in Parliament yesterday announced that a new tax known as the ‘Mansion Tax’ whereby owners of houses valued at more than Rs.100 million or exceeded a floor area of 5000 square feet would have to pay Rs.1 million to the Government. Looks like JVP is behind the budget. UNP is seems to be hijacked by JVP.

    Jay Friday, 30 January 2015 08:09 PM

This is a stupid tax, if some one can build a million Rs house he already paid tax on that money he earned, there should not be any extra tax on that, except property tax. If you going to tax all business and owners... they are going to disappear soon ... investors wont come to Srilanka as well ... there are so many countries giving good concessions to create jobs ...

Very Good Move! Let the Srilankan Survive!

    MathProf Friday, 30 January 2015 08:48 PM

This is not a bad idea, but more thought should be given to this. I am a Sri Lankan living in USA. My house is assessed every year and I pay a property tax. The property tax is used for funding school, roads and so on. The tax structure is horrible in Sri Lanka.

    TONY Friday, 30 January 2015 08:58 PM

WHAT IF A POOR RELATIVE GETS A REWARD OF A MANSION.. FROM WHERE CAN HE GET THE MONEY TO PAY THE TAX

    lanka Friday, 30 January 2015 09:31 PM

Ha ha what about the dual citizenship that would be available to all persons of Sri Lankan origin . A payment of Rs. 500,000 will have to precede each individual request, about($ 18,000 )

    pubudu Friday, 30 January 2015 09:52 PM

    Lovely ! I like this idea !

Lalith Karunaratna Friday, 30 January 2015 10:02 PM

Taxing the huge mansions are commendable due to the environmental issues and saving the floor areas in crowded places. However the condition applied as exceeding a floor area of 5000 square feet is unfair under a situation if the mansion is not personnel but a business related. I think this rule has to be revise to 10,000 square feet limit.

    Sujith Friday, 30 January 2015 11:44 PM

It is a great thing that we cut expenses. However, this is a Budget without any vision. At lease the budgets presented by earlier regime has a vision and the budget was going well with their overall plan. For an example a tax concession was given to Hybrid Cars as they are fuel efficient, enviornment friendly and cost effective. But this government has just increased the taxes of Hybrid cars without giving any attention to the pluses of the vehicles.

They should stop people who have become foreign citizens claiming pensions from Sri Lanka while getting to all the benefits from the foreign country.

    Nims Saturday, 31 January 2015 03:12 AM

Mate, There is nothing wrong in this. How many in Sri Lanka can afford to have a house worth over 100 millions. You may be one of them to get pissed off like this

    Observer Saturday, 31 January 2015 04:53 AM

Ravi "has to pay or will he pay"?

    Observer Saturday, 31 January 2015 04:54 AM

One of these days they will figure it out!

    Guruge Friday, 30 January 2015 06:57 PM

This stupid taxation should be contested at a court of law. What if a mansion owner does not have Rs.10 lacs to pay the tax? prosecute him? Sell off the mansion? Kindly apply this taxing policy for the future houses.

    lekam Saturday, 31 January 2015 09:28 AM

Kiris Baba Amaray Saturday, 31 January 2015 09:40 AM

Vijith Pieterz Saturday, 31 January 2015 09:47 AM

Ravi will pay this tax, why worry???? If he does not pay, then you question him please.

superb way to go get those greedy basterds to pay up what they stole via DM Android App

    DJ Saturday, 31 January 2015 10:42 AM

There has to be more clarity on this subject as 100 million or 5000 sq ft does not sound right. This tax is good for residents in Colombo but will not work in the rest of the country and is simply not fare

kolannawa kolla Saturday, 31 January 2015 11:31 AM

Come on man, read the news properly, it is if the house worth more than 100 million only, 1 million is not a big money for you if you can build a house at the cost 1000 million. it would be a heavy luxury house.

    boris Saturday, 31 January 2015 05:26 PM

I disagree completely with the first part of your comment. However I agree what concerns the hybrid cars, there should not be a tax increase.

    Bala Saturday, 31 January 2015 05:34 PM

And there will only be about 250 such houses at most - so no votes lost

    Bala Saturday, 31 January 2015 05:38 PM

What dollars is that ? Rs.500,000 is only US$.3760. I am willing to give you 500,000 if you will give me just half - US$9000.

Kushini Kullekarandhi Saturday, 31 January 2015 07:51 PM

This is absurd. Anyone who built a house for that much has already paid tax twice, once when he earned the money, and then when he bought the material or on the contract. This is Robin Hood thinking. Just think of some thing and add a tax to that. What about rock tax? If your garden has a rock, yo pay 1 lakh. and Dog tax? if you see a dog, pay tax. And Pen tax? for males only. Hope this government is voted out in April.

    Nalini Thursday, 05 February 2015 08:24 PM

5000 square feet is not that big. What about the house rich and money poor people. Can they borrow so they can live in the house and pay the tax. This is a jokers tax as I can see.

    Sunil Friday, 30 January 2015 05:06 PM

This is totally absurd.more thought should go in to this.with out Haphazardly doing things that comes in to one mans mind. Are u going to replace d previous govt.mentality.?Yes Ravi, his brother Saliya. and all d family has mansions (Comfortable homes )all the ministers Ranils family members.more over they have vehicles worth more than our 5000 sq feet dwellings. Those should b taxed first. We spent our whole life.put in our life savings.took loans just for a little comfort before our death to have some thing we missed Back home.we brought in much neefed foreign earnings to the country.now we are retired Or about to retire. We could lose our jobs.no earnings How r we going to pay such amounts. We are old.we need health care.Heart surgary costs more than millions.Where d hell r we going to get somuch money to pay such amounts Anually. You ministers too cannot pay this with your salary.but of course with the underhand earnings.we cannot?think about it.

    mancini Friday, 30 January 2015 03:46 PM

More info on this tax needed. One million per annum or ??either way, One million is a ridiculously high amount to pay.

    patriot Friday, 30 January 2015 04:06 PM

    dcn Friday, 30 January 2015 04:34 PM

Still it is not clear the norms that would be applied in defining mansions age etc. We are sure the FM would pay these taxes if he is liable for same and he should inform the public when he makes the payment to give confidence to them on good governance.

    Dan Friday, 30 January 2015 04:39 PM

    Brav Friday, 30 January 2015 04:49 PM

Ha ha how did Ravi K build a mansion from an accountant salary.

    shameer Friday, 30 January 2015 04:56 PM

if you could build a house worth more than 100mn you should be able to absorb this.... or live in a small house like mee..

    Empulze Friday, 30 January 2015 03:46 PM

Its good that it came to light he already possess a mansion or else the wannabees would make that a point at the general election.

    sigma Friday, 30 January 2015 05:14 PM

Unfortunately they round off decimals,so you have pay the tax...

    roma Friday, 30 January 2015 05:16 PM

Kumquat: You have foreign emplyment earning of more than Rs 100million....

    Sara Friday, 30 January 2015 06:00 PM

The way Ravi K was talking, all this time I thought he was living in a Rented Out small house. Because he spoke so much about helping the poor.

    Words Friday, 30 January 2015 06:13 PM

Lol... Maybe this tax is only applicable if your name is Rajapakse or Dhammika Perera....or maybe even remotely connected to the past regime...

    fahdmalik Friday, 30 January 2015 06:40 PM

this is per annum or what?

    Mason Friday, 30 January 2015 06:40 PM

The grumblings are unwarranted. A house of 5000 sq ft is quite large by any standards. A person who could afford this should be able to pay Rs. 1,000,000/- tax quite easily.

    samson Friday, 30 January 2015 06:45 PM

This is like a Robin Hood government, cause is good, and inject some adrenalin to poor people, but would not last long.
