A Colombo University survey has found that common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena was ahead in the polls with 53% of the votes.

According to the survey report released on December 27, the assessment was made by taking into consideration the Sinhalese voter base while predicting that the Muslim and Tamil votes would be equally divided between the candidates. It revealed that under these conditions Maithripala Sirisena would be ahead by 200,000 votes.

Against the background of the main Muslim and Tamil parties having pledged their allegiance to the common candidate, the survey revealed that he was likely to secure a 900,000 majority.

The survey also revealed that 28% of those who cast their votes for President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2010 would vote for the common candidate at this election while 11% of those who voted for the incumbent were undecided as to whom to vote.

According to the survey, 38% of first-time voters would vote for President Mahinda Rajapaksa and 33% for Mr. Sirisena while 13 to 15% had not decided on their choice of candidate.

The survey team was headed by Dr. Lalithsiri Gunaruwan and Dr. D.S. Jayaweera. (Jehan Gunasekara)

What ever these gurus say we need a change and it should be a real change.I think only MY3 is the only person who can make this change.

Well kelaniya university is goverment funded and result is obviouse. Colombo uni has another Maithree in the way of rails beloved wife.so that is bias as well..I guess both reports plus online polls can be thrown to the garbage as useless bias drama.

I think this is a very free and fair survey. Compare this with the survey done by Kelaniya Uni protessor, who is well know die hard supporter of MR. That survey has been done in two stages, one even before the nominations were handed over, based on the most popular candidate known then. We all can see how silly and unreliable this Kelaniya survey could be. The Colombo uni survey was actually based on very conservative assumptions - too conservative to show the true picture. Considering the ground reaities as of today, as a keen observer, I could say that MS would get close to 60%, if not exceed it.

Welcome 2015.....As we wish change is taking place

Rata Dinawana Magak Wednesday, 31 December 2014 10:11 PM

If we use 2010 results (MR 60 lakhs and SF 42 lakhs) and assuming this time North and East will vote 80% which was roughly the norm of the rest of the country. Also, assume North and East will vote same % for two main candidates. Then if we assume rest of the country cast same number of total votes yet 20% less what MR got in 2010 and that 20% goes to MY3. Then the MR would get 50 lakhs and MY3 would get 58 lakhs.. This is very possible.....
