The CID has recorded statements from Opposition Presidential Candidate Mathiripala Sirisena and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday, following a complaint made to the Inspector General of Police by Mr. Wickremesinghe.

He had earlier urged the Police to investigate the alleged agreement distributed to the media by former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake.

Mr. Wickremesinghe alleged that his signature and that of Mr. Sirisena had been forged.

“The CID has taken over the investigation with a Superintendant of Police heading a team of detectives. We will obtain the assistance of the Examiner of Questioned Documents and other specialists. The CID is currently tracing the original document because the only document we have in our possession is a photocopy,” Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana said.

He did not specify a time frame for the conclusion of the investigations. The presidential polls are scheduled for January 8 and the Government is flaunting this allegedly fraudulent document as a major propaganda tool during the run-up to the election.
