President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said only he could abolish the Executive Presidency because his government already possessed the two-thirds majority in Parliament.

“If the only reason to campaign against me is the abolishment of the executive presidency, what they should know is that I'm the one who can do that," he said.

He expressed these views today while addressing a ceremony held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre to offer the credentials assigning sacred lands for Buddhist Monks of the Sasanaraksan Bala Mandalaya.

He said two-thirds majority in parliament was necessary for the Constitutional amendments to abolish the executive presidency and only his government was capable of doing it.

"A parliamentary select committee was appointed to consider Constitutional amendments but the opposition is only spreading rumours without taking part in the committee,” he said.

We need to be realistic. We can make amendments to the constitution only through parliament. Hence what opposition says is not going to happen.

i agree with dinesh, this is not the time for change even this government consists with problems. we should always remember that safety is the first requirement.what is the method to ensure countries safety with opposition government. who will back up for sri lanka with ranils government?. its true that china doing all these for commercial purpose. but still country remain in peace. otherwise sri lanka will also become a part of Arab spring very soon.

What the president said is correct.....the constitution clearly states that 2/3 majority is required to abolish the exe. presidency....many have forgotten that our country need the exe presidency to fight the international allegations. as far as we know, the president has never abuse his powers for anything. only few politicos may be less than 1000 are making a big fuss of it. we common ppl are not interested at all.......i

Mr, President you only talk big of abolishing the Executive President for the last10 years. If you were really interested you could have done this. You seem to enjoy the taste of executive presidency and that is why you do not want to abolish it. Also, we have observed how you are misusing the executive powers by squandering the money of the people and not being responsible to the Parliament for the expenses..
