Nonis should have complained to NYPD: Kiriella

United National Party (UNP) MP Lakshman Kiriella, who commented on the assault on Dr. Chris Nonis, the former Sri Lankan High Commissioner in London, said a complaint should have been lodged with New York Police Department instead of waiting for redress from the Sri Lankan authorities.

Mr. Kiriella made these remarks during the committee stage of the budget debate on the vote of the External Affairs Ministry.

Dr. Nonis was assaulted at the New York residence of a SriLankan Airlines Director based in the United States.

Mr. Kiriella said in the past when he was Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, competence in foreign languages such as English and French was sought from those seeking to enter the Foreign Service but today self defence skills were a key requirement for anyone joining this service.

"Today, our ambassadors and high commissioners are getting hammered. Therefore, they should know self defence such as Judo or Karate," he said. “Dr.Nonis should have made a complaint to the New York police. Then, the assailant would have been arrested."

Monitoring MP of the External Affairs Ministry Sajin de Vaas Gunawardane, who was involved in this brawl, said he was not ready to give a detailed reply to Mr. Kiriella in this regard.

"I have clarified everything in the media. I am asking you to read these newspaper reports," he said. (KB and YP)

Dr Nonis was right in not complaining to NYPD - why should we wash our dirty cloth in public - but the problem is the hooligan who perform this vulgar act still sitting in the Parliament - This idiot thinks - people in this country belives his bulshit clarification given to the news paper - it is more saddening to see there were nobody with a backbone in the gathering in that party to open their mouth and say - what they saw at the meeting - MR please appoint people who love their country and its image to our embassies - people who love their ego and stomach had already ruined our international image beyond repair

If he rang 911, the cops from the NYPD would have been there promptly. Here in US, police service is almost instant. Anyone assaulting another will be arrested irrespective of rank.

He would not have gone to NYPD, to safeguard the name of SL, hoping the higher ups would do the needful. It certainly was a mistake, as SL higher ups are the ones habouring and using the thugs, and 3rd grade personnel in every sphere. By the way what is the need to have a Sri Lankan airlines director in US. The report says the NY residence of Director based in US. Are there residences in other part so US also?

It is regrettable to hear that Mr Kiriella gets great pleasure in disgracing his mother country in the international arena. Previously Mr Kiriella had been trying to discredit and ridicule our armed forces when they were fighting a life and death battle to rescue the nation from LTTE terrorists. Do we need such people to govern Sri Lanka?
