The GMOA warned today that there was a rapid increase in the import of toxic substances for facials because of the absence of laws regulating cosmetics in the country.

National Cancer Institute's Consultant Gynecologist Sarada Kannangara said during the past two years cosmetics which include dangerous substances had captured the local market because of the inefficiency of the Health Ministry.

He said clause 27 of the 1990 Medicine Act had been annulled in 2015 and a new Act introduced but it doesn’t have sufficient provisions to regulate the import of cosmetic items leaving room for low quality products to be imported.

“A wide range of low quality cosmetic products are available under various brand names. Several deaths have been reported because of allergic reactions to these products,” Dr. Kanangara said.

He said the GMOA had found that many of these low quality cosmetics had been imported from Pakistan.

He said most of the cosmetics contained mercury above the safe limit for instant results but they more often led to health hazards such as skin cancer. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Please be more specific and name these cosmetics. The GMOA is just beating around the bush. Are there facilities in Sri Lanka to test the quality of these products.

Please publish the names of products that are not suitable as we are not scientists or doctors.Further, you can start a protest with placards giving this information. We will support you.

this is not because of the health ministry, it's because branded cosmetics are taxed so much to make it unaffordable to most. In other countries the cosmetic industry is worth billions and provides employment and financial gain, but the short sighted SL government can't see beyond the tea, rubber, garments, tourism....

Isn't it better to rectify low quality or no service situation of medical professionals before commenting on cosmetics?

    N. Perera Wednesday, 27 September 2017 08:07 AM

There are enough facilities to test heavy metals level in low quality cosmetics coming into the country without a legal importer and distributor. Toxicity of Mercury is a very serious issue. Mercury can make to very fair within few days after killing melonocytes (pigments which gives a dark colour to the skin). The GMOA revelation should be taken seriously, the some of the mentioned creams are banned in EU and other countries long time back due to the presence of high levels of mercury.
