Steps were being taken to establish a speed detector system at the Southern and Katunayake Expressways so that the speeding drivers could be fined at the exit points, Expressway Operation, Maintenance and Management Division Director S. Opanayaka said today.

He said the steps were taken to minimize the increasing number of accidents on the expressways involving speeding vehicles.

Mr. Opanayaka said most of the accidents reported on the expressways during the last three months had been caused by speeding vehicles.

“Even though the speed limit on the expressways had been limited to 100 kmph, it is reported that most of the vehicles violate the restriction. We do not have a sufficient number of speed detectors at present and they do not have a night vision facility to function at night,” he said.

He said the new system would be operational round the clock as they were equipped with night vision and added that speeding drivers would be given a spot fine at the exit point.

“According to the new system, the errant drivers would be given a video clip of the over speeding vehicle at the exit point and no one would be able to escape. The Expressway Police would be trained to use the new system,” he said.

Mr. Opanayaka said the new system would be in place within the next two months and added that the initial test would be done at the end of this month.

“We will be able to install the system within two months time. Procurement procedures are in the final stage,” he said. (Ajith Siriwardana)

its not only speeding vehicles. its also the drivers who violate the lane laws. they drive on all sides of the expressway. Fining them should also be enforced. Most of the drivers arent educated enough on driving skills and courtesy. via DM iOS App

A good move. Many speed, take a break at the service station somewhere closer to Mathugama and speed again to cover up the 1 hour. This will not be possible any more if implemented correctly.

MAIN CAUSE FOR ACCIDENTS ARE BUSES. THEY ARE DRIVEN RUTHLESSLY NOT CARING OR SHOWING ANY RESPECT TO OTHER USERS OF THE ROAD. THEREFORE, SPEED TRAPS AND OTHER TYPE OF MECHANISM TO CONTROL SPEED AND NAB ERRANT BUS DRIVERS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN USING ANY MECHANISM IN HIGHWAYS.

what this country needs is better drivers. 100 kmph is a joke for an express way. once again its the inability for a majority of our drivers that have called for such a low limit. same story for our highways. smh. via DM Android App

This may not be effective because vehicles may stop over for a break (Coffe etc), drive faster and then drive slow down when realise to avoid being detected etc. Unidentified Police cars with speed detection tools, Police integrity, increased police presence, increased speed fines and a demerit point system might be more effective.

If these fixed cams can be installed at every 4 KM or less, it can have some effect on speed control by being 'speed breakers' on the highway, as any driver, approaching the camera can hit the brake and drive at moderate speed until drive past it, and then accelerate back until seeing next camera. But fixing them between longer gaps is waste of moneyBut these can be very effective at color lights to catch those who don't stop at red lights.

You must be someone who loves to drive over 100 that is not better driving that is called reckless higher speeds mean less control of the vehicle. check around the internet 100 Km or around that figure is the norm.

Also if some authority can check the road condition and wind holes that thrust wind across the highway which unstable the speeding vehicle.

My wife was nearly runover by a speeding bus that was overtaking two other buses and they were speeding and travelling abreast.Truly shameful.

Not only in express way it should be implemented on other roads too. Also like in other countries there should be laws to introduce WARRANT OF FITNESS for all the vehicles in future.

if you are a daily user of Express ways, you may see how fast defenders, prado , land cruisers are driven, above 150km/h ! you know to whom most of them belong. no regulations for them !!!

    Ranjith Wednesday, 12 October 2016 02:21 PM

The amount of the fine should be on the basis of excess speed of each vehicle like in developed countries. If the its between 110 and 120 one fine if it is 130, 140 increased fines. Ranjith

OK Boys! Time to grease your wheels. We have time until this month end to break the speed limits. Drive safe and make sure others are safe too. Thanks for the spot fine concept is implemented. Hope this is implemented everywhere. Rather than police been generous to pay our fines them self.
