Government is to issue more than a million licenses for three wheelers across the country in order to regulate the service, Transport and Civil Aviation Deputy Minister Ashok Abesingha said.

He said that the licenses will be issued by the transport ministries of the relevant provincial councils. The provincial minister had already been consulted on the matter, he said.

Speaking to journalists at his office in Kurunegala, Abeysinghe stated that the number of three wheelers in the country has risen to over a million requiring regulation of the service.

"We have 6.3 million vehicles in our country of which 3.3 million are motorbikes, the number of tree wheelers is 1.05 million," he said and added that around 4.3 million out of 6.3 million vehicles in the country are always on the move.

Since around 65 per cent of vehicles plying the roads are motorbikes and three wheelers a regulatory process was needed, the Deputy Minister stated. (Pushpakumara Jayaratne)

There are 297,000 licensed taxi drivers in the UK for a population of 65 million. We have 1.1 million for a population of 21 million. We have so many because we have a rubbish public transport system.

They should be restricted to pick or drop a passenger from the right side of the road. Say for example on a one way road a sudden move from the left to the right to pick a passenger is so dangerous.

I think the government should restrict the amount tuks being imported into the country and gradually look at banning these in future. Tuk has become a nuisance on the roads of Colombo.

Good move should enforce correctly, many people believe these vehicles reduce traffic due to their small size but they have the opposite effect, mainly because of highly undisciplined drivers.

Good move, they should be controlled and monitored. All should have standard meter and price. The meters should be checked regularly by authorities. Also the stickers in their vehicles to be authorized by the regulation.
