A video showing a 38-year-old mother severely beating her 6-year-old daughter at Kopai in Jaffna had been uploaded to a social media website by one of their neighbors.

She is reported to have punished the child for refusing to take a bath.

The Kopai Police arrested the mother and produced her before Acting Jaffna Magistrate
K. Ariyanayagam today.

He directed the police to have the child examined by the Judicial Medical Officer and obtain a medical report on her health condition.

The child is being kept under police protection. (Romesh Madushanka)
