Decisions with regard to educational policies should be taken by the Government and not the students, Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella said today.
Issuing a statement, Minister Kiriella said the Government had provided all the facilities required by the university students including the increase of bursaries and student allowances.
“Arrangements have been made to provide all university students with hostels facilities by 2018. Therefore the students have no problems to complain. The previous regime introduced a private university but protest marches are being held demanding to close it down five years later. No one opposed to SAITM Campus in Malabe when it was introduced,” he added.
He said even though the previous regime introduced it the government has been unable to close this down because around 500-600 students are currently studying there.
“I believe the Court will give a favourable verdict. We are ready to accept any decision given by the Courts," he added.

Do not close down SAITM, we need more of those and produce more doctors who could go to countries like the US, here most doctors are from India. No one has the right to education, it's a basic human right. Do not close or nationalize SAITM, open more private Med Colleges pl.

Please do not shut down SAITM, open the eyes, don't be frogs in wells, let students study medicine and go to countries like the US, where most doctors are from India. Why jealous of rich students. Open more SAITMS.Professsor Jinadasa, PhD, Massachusetts, USA, From Texas.

On the other hand, decision about this government will be taken by the students (and people) when the time is right.

By killing SAITM we will be killing a courageous Sri Lankan entrepreneur who overcame many obstacle placed before him. Can the people who oppose SAITM prevent a reputed foreign university setting up a medical College in Sri Lanka with due approvals? If there had been some lapses in the approval process for SAITM, it should be looked with empathy as the contribution by SAITM to the economy by way of retaining/earning foreign exchange will be greater as a against a foreign owned medical faculty in Sri Lanka. Those in the Government are the result of Educations Policies they went through. The question is do we want these examples to create future education policies, needless to say what the end product would be.The UN Secretary General has said that the youth involvement is essential for social justice which includes Education as well. So let the youth decide, the old can take a rest, preferably retire for good.

The government has the right to educate everyone and everyone has the right to an education. Since only a fraction gets into the universities even if they're qualified, especially from Colombo the government has to allow private universities.

Educational policies must be determined by the government on the advice of the experts in education. Our educational system is in such a mess as it has been tampered too much past Ministers who did not seek proper advice.

Agreeing with Andrew education policy should only be handled by EDUCATED professionals and not politicians who have vested interests in educational institutions. via DM Android App
