Political rallies and meetings will no longer be held at some 23 public grounds located in Colombo and its suburbs including the Hyde Park Corner, the Colombo Municipality said yesterday.

Among the 23 grounds, the renovation works of some ten public grounds had already begun, CMC Commissioner M.K.V.Anura said.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, CMC Commissioner M.K.V.Anura said no political party or trade union would be allowed to hold their rallies and meetings at the grounds including the Hyde Park Corner ground, Maligawatte P.D. Sirisena football ground, Ratnam Ground Colombo 13 and Nawagampura Ground, Colombo which were currently being renovated.

" The Hyde Park Corner Ground is being converted into a foot ball complex," he said.

“Hyde Park Corner Ground was earlier a football complex used by the public. After the political rallies and meetings started to take place there, the opportunity for the public to use the grounds for sports is lost,” Mr. Anura said.

He said the grounds which were earlier used as a sport complex, later were utilised for political rallies which became a nuisance. Hence such public grounds should be given only to the public.

"The renovation works started at the Hyde Park Corner Grounds are scheduled to be completed in ten days time," Mr. Anura said. (Piyumi Fonseka)

It is sadly mistaken if politicos think that peoples power can be suppressed by such draconian regulations. Masses will find a way. Government is shooting it's own foot.

However good intention for sports and recreation as depicted (and true to an extent) it also reflects a form of suppression of political activities and dissent.

This is good news. No more traffic jams when trying to get home after a hard days work. MR and the then mayor of Colombo destroyed Hyde Park and made it a place tor political rallies depriving the kids of the playground. We should never vote for these two anti social elements.

Very good move. Allocate an area for these useless political meetings, Protests, Strikes, walks .. etc in a place which doesn't disrupt the life of citizens. We need to go with the developed world.

These public meetings are a nuisance and cause total paralysis of civilian life. Just for publicity and no real value.Build a venue or give some venue outside Colombo where it does not block main artery roads.

I hope someone go to the Supreme Courts and file a case against the CMC, This is violating the fundamental rights of the people. Which ever the political party, CMC should not deprive their fundamental rights to gather.

Only rulers propaganda will now be heard UNP and UNP wing of SLFP over TV and national day meetings.. No decent or any opposition will be tolerated for the next 30 years. It Is vital for the survival of both factions. Country also has no real opposition party or leader who represent grivences of the ordinary people. very sad to see state of democracy. With the numbers in parliament including the peoples rejects with the external support who will dare to oppose. via DM Android App
