A Parents collective of the injured Jaffna University students said today they would not send their children to the university until the security of the students were guaranteed.

The parents of over 800 Sinhala students wrote to the Vice Chancellor of the University saying that the students faced constant security threats.

Addressing a media conference in Colombo, the parents also asserted the need to reinforce mechanisms to enhance mutual understanding between communities in the university.

The letter sent and copied to the President, Prime Minister and the Minister of Higher Education further urged the administration to provide in house hostel facilities to students.

“We as parents are faced with a big dilemma following the recent clash, and are unwilling to send our children back to university until concrete steps are taken to ensure their security” the letter said. (Indika Sri Aravinda)

This is the backward nature of our people. Over 18 means an adult. But we consider them as children.

Some are happy to rush to relate this to racism but clashes among the Uni students are not a strange thing in SL. You ignore the menace of heavy drug usage specially in Jaffna and these are the result of that!

Good, keep them at home and give them on marriage. Taxpayers will benefit.

Day by day Sinhalese Buddhists are being pushed to the edge of the cliff but the government has no power to say a word to protect them. Is this what people expected of the Yahapalanaya? Seems like Yahapalanaya is serving well for the Tamils and Muslims, but not for the majority Sinhalese.

not only students, even pilgrims from south were subjected to attacks in Jaffna in recent past

    sam Friday, 22 July 2016 06:08 AM

This is bloody silly. YOU all should insist that in order for the students to be sent to Jaffna the govt must deploy the army in jaffna for the security of the students. This would never have happened if army was deployed there.

So you say.. I have first hand experience seeing racism against tamil students at Peradeniya. Just before the final exams the cops will raid the Dorms and arrest Tamil students for "questioning", releasing them just after the exams with no explanation given! How do I know this? Because my father is a senior lecturer and Peradeniya at the time and the warden of a student hostel.

Where are Geneva Prince and Western ambassadors who deliver us daily doses of reconciliation ? This is the real reconciliation they want for Sri Lankans and the results of their zillion trips to North. We are heading back to the dark age thanks to our own idiots who never learn from the history! Illan kewa!

The violence that erupted in the Jaffna Campus should be thoroughly investigated and all those found guilty should be barred from entering any University for life. If no action is taken students in other Campuses in the Country will react and the Government should take the full responsibility. The Citizens are loosing their confidence in the Government and it is the duty of the Regime to safe guard the major ethnic group. What is taking place in the Country is making the Citizens forget the corruption and other malpractices by the former Regime and feeling that they were safe at the hands of the minority groups.

By the name of Racism not a single Tamil or Muslim student harmed even during the the war time in the south. So as educated group of students of Jaffna University we expect the same thing from you for Sinhalese and Muslim students who came from south.
