The Value Added Tax (VAT), which had been increased up to 15 percent from 11 would not be repealed but alterations would be done to justify the increment, Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera said today.

Addressing a media briefing Mr. Perera said it was impractical to abolish VAT and the Government was on its way to proceed with the alterations in the tax in order to offer relief to the people.

“At present, the increment of VAT has been interpreted as an unusual concept of ‘Good Governance’ by anti-government forces. But I would like to clarify that, VAT is a world known concept, and has prevailed for many years. VAT is a first-rated and practical tax. If somebody interpreted VAT as an ominous tax that person is not aware of the real concept behind VAT,” he added. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

Whilst VAT is a well known concept dear Sir,it is perhaps you that is unaware of GATT law to which Sri Lanka is a signatory. It limits indirect taxes at import to around 28%. We Sri Lankans pay even 300% disguised, as PAL, NBT, ESC,VAT, CESS, and other acronyms in addition to the legally allowed maximum 28% Duty.We are also expected to pay VAT on top of all this, but it is impossibly difficult to obtain a refund when it is legally due.

The other countries charge tax but they do not misuse or harass the people. Those countries render superior service to the citizens. Here, the privileges are for only politicians. Enough talking, remove the VAt for health and other essential goods.

President Sirisena should intervene immediately and exempt VAT from all hospital charges, clinical and consultation fees. It is a sin to collect VAT from the suffering people. 15% is a big amount for many, who are making personal sacrifice to come for Private medical treatment. They are ill and need treatment/cure. They are compelled to go to Private hospitals, because the govt is unable to provide free healthcare to people. I think, the civil society should demand from this government, who is attempting to pay for the debt of the past, from the poorest of the people.
