Cabinet approval had been given for the feasibility report preparation on the light rail transit system in Western Province and to commence its construction, Cabinet Co-Spokesman Gayantha Karunathilake said today.

The Light Rail Transit system in the western region will be implemented with assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

“The Western Region Megapolis Programme is given its priority as it addresses transport issues in the region and it has identified that improvement of public transport modes, development of road infrastructure, management of transport demand and environmentally sustainable transportation is crucial in this regard,” he said.

“The most suitable solution to present transport demand of the Megapolis region is identified as the Light Rail Transit and accordingly seven routs have been identified in this regard,” he said.

The identified route -Colombo Fort-Kollupitiya - Bambalapitiya - Union Place Maradana to Malabe via Borella was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, he said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

I wonder why the government is not even talking about developing the existing railway system to meet its demands. If our existing railway system developed in a proper way Colombo and other cities wont be crowded by outsiders. it will solve the traffic problem in a huge scale via DM Android App
