The Railway department had increased the penalty fine to Rs 3,000 for those who travel without tickets with effect from today, Railway Commercial Superintendent A.D.G. Seneviratne said.

“According to the instructions of Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva the Railways Department had increased the fine with effect from today,” he said.

Earlier, a commuter traveling in the third class compartment without a ticket had to pay a fine of Rs. 900, a second class compartment commuter Rs. 1,100 and a first class commuter Rs. 1,650 then it was increased to Rs.2500 in 2013. But now it had been increased up to Rs.3000.

“The Minister wanted to increase the fine on ticketless travellers since train fares are the lowest when compared with other public transport services. He also wants to double the fines for people travelling in first and second class carriages with lesser tickets,” Mr. Seneviratne said.

According to the rules and regulations to the Railway Department, fines will be charged on the ticketless travelers along with double the train fare.

The Railway department requests the commuters to travel always with a valid train ticket in the relevant compartment to avoid facing any inconvenience. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

Acceptable one. Before implement this why the railway authority improve the facilities at ticket counter of every station, mainly in Fort, where commuters need to join in a very long ques and also need to communicate with the officer who is like in a cell with poor lighting condition. If automated ticket issuing machine is installed in main station and a temporary ticketing counter in the train for those who are late to catch the train can purchase in the train.

Travelling in a train is probably cheaper than cycling. Wonder why people still go ticketless?

WE have seen theses measure been promised before but life goes on as usual. I travelled on a Sri Lankan train for the first time with my who is two years old with a third class ticket. I was directed towards a carriage when I presented my ticket to officer who was seated near the train at the platform. Once the train started to move, A ticket master came to our carriage and started to check our tickets. As soon as I showed my ticket, he said I was on the wrong carriage as where my son and I were sitting on is a second class carriage. As soon as he told me, I realised I was directed to the wrong carriage earlier by one of the staffs at the station. As soon as I stood up with my son to go to the appropriate carriage, the ticket checker held my shoulders and pushed me back to my seat and asked me to wait until he finished his round. When he returned, I was asked to pay the fine. When I told him that I do not carry the amount he asked for, he asked me to open my purse. Once I opened my purse, he looked for money and told me I have my bank ATM card and I shou

I was told to leave my two year old son behind with the ticket checker until I pay my fine for travelling with a third class ticket on a second class carriage. I was physically pushed back on a seat when I want to proceed to the appropriate carriage.
