The Ministry of Defence (MOD) said today it had revoked the decision taken by the three armed forces to boycott any public events attended by Eastern Province Chief Minister Nazeer Ahamed.

Military Spokesman Jayanath Jayaweera said the Chief Minister would also be permitted to enter military camps.

Based on a request by the security forces -- in the wake of an incident where the Chief Minister had publicly rebuked a naval officer during a function held at the Sampur Maha Vidyalaya -- the MOD said the security forces would not permit the Chief Minister Nazeer Ahamed to enter military camps and that they would not participate at public functions attended by him.

In a May 27 letter to President Maitripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe the Chief Minister had condemned the decision taken by the security forces to boycott events attended by him.

He said they had decided to boycott any function attended by him even before the President had inquired into the matter. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

Just shows the incompetency of the MOD, The secretary to Ministry of Defense and the Tri-forces for making such arrogant announcements all for a public gallery that is reeked with racism.

I won't expect any difference in MR era. But the so called "yahapalana" people should have done something that the public could praise. So far, all the things that have happened are even worse than MR era. So the neutral public like us have no choice than cancelling our votes. Sometimes I personally feel that the 6.2 mil people have made a wrong choice.

If anyone has still not learned their lesson to NOT spit against gravity. This incident shows that we can never put an end to racism in this country.

The CMs belligerent outburst was shameful and an embarrassment. Especially in the presence of foreign dignitaries. He should be made to apologise to all concerned if he already has not done so. But the Forces too are at fault for having bypassed the EP while organizing this event. The school where the event was conducted is under the purview of the EP education ministry. via DM Android App

I think this is a good decision as an apology was made and accepted. Many people made a mess out of this incident even without knowing the actual story. We are developing country and should take things positively, solve the issues and move on. I believe that is what just happened. No need to create a big issue out of this incident.
