EP Chief Minister’s tirade

Defence Ministry Secretary Karunasena Hettiarchchi said today he had not received any complaints about an incident where Eastern Province Chief Minister Nazeer Ahamed was alleged to have rebuked a naval officer at an event at the Sampur Maha Vidyalaya on Friday.

A video showing the Chief Minister allegedly scolding a naval officer at the opening ceremony of the Science Lab and Computer Unit of the Sampur Maha Vidyalaya over a ‘protocol’ issue had gone viral.

Mr. Hettiarchchi said he viewed the video and would inquire into the incident if there was any complaint.

Reportedly, the compère at the ceremony had invited Eastern Province Governor Austin Fernando, who was the Chief Guest and US Ambassador Atul Keshap to the stage to distribute books to the students.

Media personnel had gathered round the stage while the Chief Minister had made his way to the stage. When the compère had told media personnel to make way for the students, the Chief Minister had mistakenly thought he was being left out and broke out in a tirade saying,

"Get out from here idiot. If you don’t know what protocol is, just get out. Who the hell are you to stop me? Even you, Governor don’t know what the protocol is. I respect the Excellency the Ambassador much more. You should know Governor, you should know the protocol," he was heard saying. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

This is not the mistake of Nazeer Ahamed,but the mistake of the goverment.The goverment turned a blind eye towards the activities of these people like Nazeer and many other members of parliment in the east.These people know very well that whatever they do, the goverment is not going to ask them because the goverment want their support.The goverment should investigate all the activities of all these people.

What is a naval officer doing in a civil function-opening ceremony of a science lab? Where is the school's head teacher? The naval and army officers must keep out of all civil functions so we can build a united multi racial and religious country. The whole world knows from this video clip we are still struggling to build a united nation. I hope the new administration under Mathiri-Ranil would implement constructive measures to prevent this kind of arguments erupt in front of the media.

Shame on you CM. Even if the navel officer is at fault 100%, as a CM of you should have acted more responsibly. Your issue with the navel officer should have been taken separately with him at a private discussion and not in public like this. This was a public event where school children and foreign ambassadors participated.

The choice of words by the CM is appalling to the say the least, even if the naval officer had overstepped his mark. I take issue with the CM on his tirade against the Governor who is a real gentleman, and by his behaviour the CM has brought disrepute to the office he holds.

One cannot take things out of context from a video clip and say who is right and who is wrong. All parties have their grievances for their defense. Why are the Naval officers getting involved in matters of a civil and political engagement in an inauguration of a school's science lab?
