School admission conundrum may compel docs to leave country

The Government Medical Officer’s Association (GMOA) today warned that doctors would be compelled to leave the country because of the difficulties they undergo when looking for schools for their children.

It said the country would lose its doctors if they go overseas because of the Government’s failure to admit their children to national schools.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Nalinda Herath told a news conference that more than 200 children had been deprived of admission to State-run schools this year.

He said some doctors are transferred every four years according to the special transfer scheme and some doctors go for overseas training, and hence find it difficult to show five-years of permanent residence to get national school admission for their children.

When inquired by Daily Mirror, Education Ministry Secretary W.M. Bandusena said the ministry had already reached an agreement with the doctors of the GMOA and specialists with regard to this matter. (Piyumi Fonseka)

We need doctors. The issue is unable show 5 year residency owing to transfers etc. Why not the govt. as a special case waive off 5 years and make it only 4 years for them?

    Ralahamy Tuesday, 22 March 2016 11:14 AM

NO, they think other people are donkeys. We have the politicians as blood suckers, and now the doctors have joined the parasite gang.

good. only they have children without school. if they do so others can have schools. good decisions of brave docs.

    Gomis Monday, 21 March 2016 09:10 PM

Though they try to claim special, they do not have an easy life in western countries because these Sri Lanka mbbs docs have to study and pass exams on their own expense to qualify and meet western standards. Do we need docs for our day to day live as they think???? No, only sick and elderly go and get fleeced by them and come back with more problems after seeing their arrogance....

doctors are also government servants. why they want to be treated differently all government officers are going through the problems they are facing and nothing new.will they take their children out from a high profile school in colombo just because of they were transferred then how will you have the vacancies in classes to enrol children its a vicious cycle via DM Android App

    lalith Monday, 21 March 2016 05:52 PM

What will they get abroad? Work in a pharmacy or as medical reps job? With there knowledge they cannot get a better job. But anyways it is good for them to work abroad but not foreign doctors in Sri Lanka.

    BuffaloaCitizen Monday, 21 March 2016 05:40 PM

Doctors are the highest paid racket in this country. They get duty free vehicles and special priviledge to do private practice. Why the hell do they want to send their children to national schools when they have enough money to put them in private schools? Come-on doctors, do you want to scrounge on public money, when your category is one of the highest lucrative incomes found in Sri Lanka.

    thila198 Monday, 21 March 2016 05:37 PM

very funny. why only for doctors? other people are bulls? other people not doing night duty? only them doing night duty ?
