China had requested for a 1000 acre block of land in Hambantota to set up an investment zone, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

He said more Chinese investments were coming in to Sri Lanka.

“A Chinese company is interested in starting a ship building project in Hambantota as well,” he said.

While citing that the Andhra Pradesh State Government had given a 10,000 acre block of land to China, he said Sri Lanka would lose investors if it misses opportunities.(Yohan Perera)

It is not about China or which country brings in development, it is about the large scale corruption with the contracts and China happened to ask less questions.

Leasing out lands to China is welcome. China being a truly socialist country, it does not have any ulterior motives, unlike some of our pseudo-friendly western bloc countries.

PM said he would reduce loans and develop based on investments. You should eat your own words

    Sammy Sunday, 21 February 2016 10:56 AM

There is nothing wrong in leasing out land to foreign countries, for economic benefit of Sri Lanka. However, the Govt. should be on top of it and have proper monitoring mechanisms and checks and balances in place so that the land is not misused.

    Sumanasekara Sunday, 21 February 2016 10:54 AM

Any government in developing countries highly depend on loans for developments. Still we pay for loans we have taken for Mahawali projects. Its wander why PM, still look for opportunities from China, since he was the prime critic of China.

    HotPot Sunday, 21 February 2016 10:42 AM

Is this compensation for the delayed port city project? The last one year you have shown poor leadership qualities . Time to hand over the government to SF and go with dignity.
