The CID has launched an investigation into the recent publication of death threats and defamatory remarks against President Maithripala Sirisena via social media websites including Facebook by several people including women, Police said today.

Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said the number of messages had increased in the wake of the arrest of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera.

“The presidential secretariat has complained to the police about this matter and the investigations have been now handed over to the CID,” he said.

ASP Gunasekara said legal action would be taken against the offenders. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

You cannot threaten any body verbally or even by writing,it is a punishable offence. The expose the culprits and punish them. They need to apologize as well.

The Police and the CID should have looked into these vulgar and cruel verbal assaults on the President Elect long time ago. It is their duty. They waited all this while till someone complained. The CID should arrest them all irrespective of their positions and connections and the courts should punish them without bail. I believe these verbal vulgar assaults are committed by MRs supporters as MR is highly esteemed and praised against MS. CID we are watching you via DM Android App

"It is not necessary for the Crown to prove that the person uttering the threat did so with the intent that it be conveyed to its intended recipient. Nor is it necessary to prove that the person making the threat intended to carry it out or was capable of doing so. The motive for making the threat is equally irrelevant" -

you can talk the truth about anyone as long as you dont threaten them let it be MR or MS .. thats called democracy.. there should be freedom of speech.

insulting is fine but i agree....threats have ro be dealt with....it will be handled swiftly in any other country. I saw some fool who cleans Toilets in Korea making blatant threats....the Government should have him arrested in Korea and deported to Sri Lanka to face criminal prosecution. via DM Android App
