The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) warned today it would take legal action against Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne and the Health Ministry Secretary Anura Jayawickrama next week for permitting the Malabe Private Medical University to carry out clinical training at government hospitals.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Navin de Soysa said they were currently consulting legal opinion on this matter.

He told a news conference that they had decided to take action against the minister because he had ignored the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) recommendations on the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).

He claimed that the SAITM did not have the basic infrastructure facilities so as to function as a teaching hospital in Sri Lanka.

“Obtaining degrees from a substandard university will result in inferior doctors being produced with at the risk of patients' lives. If the minister's eyes are focussed on Avant Garde and on corrupt politicians, why is he silent on the SAITM controversy? Even the President has told us that he would not allow private medical education in Sri Lanka. The minister cannot go beyond the president’s word,” Dr. de Soysa said. (Piyumi Fonseka)

Yes, whole heartedly agree. The govt must place a bond of min 10 yrs to serve the people as a bond for their free education on tax payers money. Failing which charge them heavily.

I am a Sri Lankan retired and living in Canada who wanted to come back and settle down there . My own brother is a medical specialist working there and 6 others who are medical specialists who studied with him are also known to me and I have enough properties there in addition to my pension , but I changed my mind on coming back there and the reason is I had brain surgery and was out of the hospital here in Canada in 2 days fully fixed. 2 of my cousins had similar problems in Sri Lanka - One came out of the hospital as a vegetable and finally died he spent RS 3 Million . Another cousin is in hospital for several days now with a similar issue no progress his bills continue to mount. Believe it or not my cost on my illness was just 0 dollars. Sri Lanka officially has a free health care system and who is responsible for this mess - unfortunately GMOA 100% and the overworked doctors who have to work 2 jobs .only way it can be improved is to increase the supply of doctors.

There is no institute for regulating the Private universities. Why government does not set up Higher Education commission similar to Pakistan. Whether university is government or private, all universities should be well regulated in terms of qualification of teachers and entry requirement of students. Universities are not just for teaching and it should focus on research and research paper publication on top journals.

If you really worry about standards your your should work together with govt. Set standards, whole country will support you ,GMAA lost public support long ago , be careful next time you might beaten by public if you go on strike on road.

Only JVP and GMOA is against this. The opinion of the whole country does not represent their view. Health Minister is correct.

    Premalal Friday, 15 January 2016 05:48 PM

I hope that the country will rally behind the minister of health and overcome the power of this mafia.

Number of doctors in Sri Lanka is not enough. We are sick and tired of waiting for days to see specialists even in private hospitals paying 2000-3000 for 5 minutes. Only way to go ahead is to open private universities so that the present doctors who studied from LKG to postgraduate with our hard earned tax money let go of their ego, and stop being mare money making machines.

    rohantha Friday, 15 January 2016 05:42 PM

Yea. GMOA should file a case without threatening the govt with strikes. This should be the way. Then courts will decide on it. Another good result of yahapalanaya

    BanisMama Friday, 15 January 2016 05:26 PM

Sri Lanka needs more private universities and technical colleges as only a small percentage of the AL qualified can enter state universities. Knowledge is wealth and time to pay for it.
