The Vehicle Importers Association of Lanka (VIAL) today welcomed President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to withdraw the 2016-budget proposal to increase the import tax on electric vehicles by 50 percent.

Thus the import tax on electric vehicles would remain at five percent.

During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday (23), the president had rejected the tax increase.

VIAL president Indika Sampath Merenchige said the decision to withdraw the proposal was advantageous to the vehicle import industry.

He said, however, that the prices of electric cars would increase slightly because of the revised valuation system. “Therefore an electric car would cost at least Rs. 2.8 million,” he said.

Co-Cabinet Spokesman Gayantha Karunathilake said the government had decided not increase in the import tax on electric cars because of numerous requests by various persons.

“As a responsible government which considers people's opinions, we decided to withdraw the proposal,” he said. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

The FM made a statement still at the same table with car dealers that the tax on EVs will not be reduced. The FM has to go. He is not suitable for this job.

This proves that this budget did not have any underhand deals. People objected, and the "Sanwedi thaththa" agreed to the opinion of the people.

FM s many decisions have been over turned and I think he should resign respectfully. He is not fit to be a FM even though the UNP gave him to satisfy his desires. There are many capable ministers who could carry out his duty much better than him. Also he is a huge commission agent who work only on lucrative deals for him. As a overseas employee who has contributed to the Sri Lankan economy for the last 15 years, we too has not got any facility or benefits from these budgets. Instead of that we get taxed and raped in customs even if we bring something for our use to Sri Lanka. This is sickening.

    Premalal Friday, 25 December 2015 06:04 AM

We definitely need a cabinet reshuffle just to change the FM. The country needs some confidence not confusion.

A responsible government should not only listen to public opinion, but also should make sound and stable policy decisions on one go. The message on economic leadership is not good.

The environment and the people who love it thanks you Mr. President.

    k.soysa Friday, 25 December 2015 12:02 AM

The Minister says that the duty has been reduced but the VIAL person says the prices will go up SLIGHTLY. What is all this??!!

    piyal Thursday, 24 December 2015 11:40 PM

Being a UNPer and being a EV owner - if not President God bless SL - Decision making never been so poor by Finance Ministry - never in the history - Its the art of "making all the people unhappy at the same time" not easy though!

    Chryshan K. Thursday, 24 December 2015 11:36 PM

Wow its an excellent move. Bad luck for combined opposition since tax increase on electric cars was the only thing they had to talk about.

    Lanka Thursday, 24 December 2015 11:27 PM

Thanks for hearing people! Next time please listen to people before the budget not after approving a crazy budget.

Aiyo Ravi. Time to pack up and go. You are a total failure and I new it from the start. Give the job to professional like Eran or Harasha. Finally Get Lost.

Bippity Boppity Boo Thursday, 24 December 2015 11:25 PM

Oh! Sorry for Ravi and his gang of car dealers who posed for the photograph and informed the public that the tax on cars will not be reduced. They had to cheek to tell us to buy the cars they had in stock.
