Temba Bavuma, the captain of the visiting South African team, will miss the rest of the ongoing Sri Lanka tour.

Cricket South Africa said Keshav Maharaj will be captain for the remaining two ODIs, while the captain for the T20I series will be announced later.

"He has a chip fracture and needs rest for about four weeks. At present, it does not look like he needs any operation,” a source attached with the team management also said.

"The team management is considering sending him home. This will enable him to recover before the World Cup,” the source further added.

On Thursday, while batting, a throw from midwicket hit Bavuma on his thumb and had to retire hurt after scoring 38 runs.

He was in terrible pain and his hand was strapped. He was not required to come bat after retiring as the match was lost in the last over.

He was taken to Nawaloka Hospital for the scans.
