Yupun Abeykoon after winning the men’s 100m final in Germany

Italian-based Sri Lankan sprinter Yupun Abeykoon improved on his national record by clocking 10.09 seconds to win the men’s 100m final at the Anhalt 2021 athletic meet, held in Dessau, Germany on Friday. However, Sri Lanka Athletics has decided not to recognise it as a national record since it was a wind assisted time.

Abeykoon renewed the Sri Lanka men’s 100m record twice clocking 10.16s and 10.15s within the last two months. The Olympic qualifying standard for the men’s 100m is 10.05 seconds. The last date to qualify for the Olympics is June 29.
