Sri Lanka Rugby has taken a significant step towards strengthening its Sevens programme by shortlisting a pool of 28 players set to be contracted in the near future with the focus on upcoming international assignments.

The final list of contracted players are yet to be decided.

The experienced Srinath Sooriyabandara, a former Kandy SC standout, is tipped to lead the Sevens outfit.
His leadership and experience are expected to play a crucial role as Sri Lanka prepares for a demanding calendar that includes the Asian Sevens Series in China and Sri Lanka, along with the highly looked forward to Asian Games in Japan.

According to Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) the Sevens format holds immense importance for Sri Lanka, offering a pathway to success on the international stage.

With its shorter format and emphasis on speed, fitness and skill, Sevens rugby provides Sri Lanka with a realistic opportunity to compete against top Asian nations.

The decision to contract a core group of players reflects a professional approach aimed at building consistency, improving fitness standards, and developing combinations ahead of major tournaments.

Regular exposure and structured preparation will be key in elevating Sri Lanka’s performance levels.

With the appointment of a head coach expected in the coming weeks, the new-look Sevens programme signals a renewed commitment by SLR to regain its competitive edge and make a strong impact in regional and continental competitions.
