Sri Lanka will field a Kandy-dominated side for the second Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens set to take place this weekend in Colombo.
The 13-man squad features eight players from Kandy SC, underlining the club’s dominance in the national Sevens setup.
Leading the side will be Kavindu Perera, whose leadership and agility have been instrumental in Kandy’s domestic success.
Joining him are his club teammates Dinal Ekanayake, Chatura Soysa, Gayan Perera, Heshan Jansen, Suranga Kodituwakku, Diluksha Dange and the vastly experienced Srinath Sooriyabandara, affectionately known as “Soori,” Sri Lanka’s most seasoned Sevens campaigner.
The inclusion of the eight Kandy players provides the squad with a strong blend of experience, skill and understanding vital assets for a fast-paced format like Sevens rugby.
Their long-standing familiarity as club teammates is expected to enhance team chemistry and cohesion on the field.
The other players are Yehan Bulathsinghalage (former S. Thomas’ College), Kalana Chamuditha (Kingswood College and Air Force), Janidu Dilshan (CH), Dharshana Dabare (CH) and Akash Madushanka who complete a balanced national lineup. Their inclusion adds youthful depth and versatility to the squad.
At the time of going to press the women’s outfit was not finalised with many changes expected to take place after they ended in the ninth place in the first leg Sevens which took place in China last month.
With home advantage and a core of Kandy stars, Sri Lanka will aim to deliver a strong showing in Colombo as they continue preparations for the upcoming Asian Sevens Series fixtures.
