The much-anticipated Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) Annual General Meeting and elections will be held on October 8, with a keen contest expected for the presidency between Lasitha Gunaratne and Pavithra Fernando.

Fernando appears to have drawn first blood, with his key allies already securing uncontested victories in several top positions. Shanitha Fernando has been elected Deputy President, Chinthaka Perera as Vice President, and Subash Jayathilake as Secretary, while Thilini Rangani takes the Female Representative slot and former Navy skipper Stephen Greggory is confirmed as Athlete Representative — all without opposition.

The post of Treasurer, however, will be decided in a contest between Hirunika Balasuriya and Nomal Ekanayake.

Voting power at the AGM will be decisive. The four leading clubs — Kandy Sports Club, CR & FC, CH & FC, and Havelocks SC — are each entitled to six votes. The Police, Army, Air Force, and Navy will wield seven votes apiece, an extra vote afforded for fielding B Division teams. Sabaragamuwa is the only provincial rugby union eligible to cast votes this year. With Fernando strengthening his hand through uncontested positions and Gunaratne aiming to reclaim the presidency, the stage is set for a high-stakes battle to steer the future of Sri Lanka Rugby.
