Gateway College recorded a stellar performance at the Sri Lanka Indoor Rowing Nationals 2026, held on January 30-31 at the DRC, with an event count of 5 Golds, 4 Silvers, and a Bronze, and a total medal haul of 17 Golds, 10 Silvers, and 1 Bronze across all junior, youth, and mixed categories. Gateway athletes demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, and teamwork that reaffirmed the school’s growing prominence in the national rowing scene.
The championship began on a golden note as Jaanya Kumarawadu clinched the top spot in the U-19 Girls Individual event, setting the tone for what would be a weekend of triumphs. The U-14 Girls Relay team of Siyara Rajakaruna, Shehaya Pathirana, Devasha Edirisinghe, and Griyada Hapukotuwa followed suit with a dominant gold-winning performance.
Strong individual contributions continued to bolster Gateway’s medal tally. Treyden Gunasekara and Siyara both secured Silver in their respective U-14 individual events. Jaanya added a Bronze in the U-23 Girls Individual, while the U-14 Boys Relay team (Treyden, Seth Ranathunga, Nethum Mendis, and Senumitha Vithanage) powered their way to Silver. Ganindu Kirinde also delivered a commendable performance with a fifth-place finish in the U-19 Boys Individual category.
Day 2 saw Gateway dominate the relay events, capturing multiple Golds. The U-19 Mixed Relay team of Jaanya, Sehasa De Silva, Nathon Gregory, and Ganindu secured Gold, as did the U-16 Boys Relay team of Treyden, Chanuth Peiris, Ometh Pathirana, and Yumeth Godage. The U-16 Mixed Relay team (Shehaya, Siyara, Ometh Pathirana, and Yumeth Godage) added another Gold to the tally.
Further success came in the U-23 Mixed Relay, where Jaanya, Sehasa, Manuga Wijesinghe, and Aaron Wimalasena clinched Silver. The U-19 Boys Relay team (Ganindu, Nathon, Manuga Wijesinghe, and Aaron Wimalasena) finished a close fourth, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
By securing second place in the overall medal tallies in both the Men’s and Women’s categories, Gateway College outperformed several leading schools with longstanding rowing traditions. These results reflect the dedication of Gateway’s athletes and coaches and the strong support of school leadership in sustaining a proud tradition of sporting excellence.
