Michigan Wolverines were crowned champions of the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament after defeating UConn Huskies 69–63 in the final held at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, USA on Tuesday.
This victory marked their second championship in the program’s history, having previously won in 1989.
In a tightly contested and physical encounter, where both teams struggled offensively, Michigan Wolverines were able to edge ahead owing to their organised defense and disciplined play.
Eliot Cadeau, who was the man of the night for Michigan, scored 19 points and also earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award. Despite carrying a knee injury, Michigan’s star player Yaxel Lendeborg contributed 13 points on 4-for-13 shooting.
Alex Karaban was the highest scorer for UConn with 17 points and an impressive 11 rebounds. Tarris Reed Jr was the second-highest scorer for UConn, adding 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
Despite having several opportunities to close the gap in the final minutes of the game, the Huskies were unable to convert them due to defensive fouls and missed three-pointers.
UConn committed 22 personal fouls, while Michigan converted 25 of their 28 free throws.
A historic night in Indianapolis saw Michigan rise again to the top of the college basketball world, ending one of the longest championship droughts in the program’s history.
